The Magick of Taurus is raw, sensual, grounded in the physical experience and prolific in its product if anchored by desire and emotional attachment. Whatever we apply Taurean energy to is going to receive a potent dose of strengthening and willing and complete i in earthly matters. Taurus is the quintessential astrological sign to make use of when exploring the physical nature of our being and all that is impacted by and results from that physicality . Its primary functions of grounding and anchoring address the very raw and primal instincts that are part of our physicality. Sweat from hard labor or exercise, sexual pursuits and intimate relationships, laying the foundations (literally or metaphorically) of what defines us through the possessions acquired, money and the way in which we engage in the business of our lives all are part of the potency of Taurus.

Venus as the ruling planet of Taurus adds an energy that seeks beauty, harmony and awakening of the emotional self. It is the heart that yearns for romance and connection. This energy supports social interaction and the overwhelming goal is to connect at a deep and often intimate level with those of our choosing. A love of the natural world and what treasures are available to enhance the home life and material endeavors of Taurus are the motivations for remaining strong and at times immovable in what has been decided upon. Matters of the heart are approached in a very concrete and visceral way and the interactions are ones that are very loyal and enduring in their stability. This is the basic need of one human in seeking out its complimentary mate to avoid isolation and aloneness. This expression of Venus is one that is intensely grounded in the physicality of love and relationships versus the Venusian expression through Libra (also ruled by Venus) which is much more cerebral and finds it resolution first in the idea of love.

Solar Month Magick

Enhances exploration of what makes you uniquely human and the physical experiences associated with manifest form.

The Solar Month of Taurus is an excellent time to begin to take stock of what the gifts of your human experience are and how these ultimately effect the comfort or dis-ease you have in navigating all of the challenges and joys of living in a physical state. This is also a time for testing the limits of what that physical form is capable of, taking that information, synthesizing (Fixed Modality) it and then moving forward based on what you have learned of yourself in the physical world. The energy of this Solar month of Taurus, next flows into talkative Gemini, so whatever is done during this time sets the foundations for what we will then communicate and share broadly in the upcoming month.

Taurus as the second sign of the Solar Year is still in the process of “becoming”. What was catalyzed last month in Aries fuels the desire to be fully present and fully engaged in human matters. Making use of this month’s energies to sure up and create a stronger vessel of container for that initial spark requires patience and hard work. With that thought in mind, using Taurus energy as a Solar working should be fully focused on the intent of the possibilities and future potential that the concrete and physical work of building in this phase will ultimately produce.

This approach can be used for short-term projects, but is most effective for long-term workings. A goal such as wanting to become stronger, fitter and healthier benefits from beginning its cycle while the Sun is in Taurus. The byproducts of care and tending to the physical body and its needs are the ability to work in support of maintaining a steady flow of income, which in turn is used to purchase those things that support the healthy lifestyle and those things that give you pleasure and joy.

Similar to the New, Full and Waning cycles of the Lunar Month, beginning the working in the Solar Month of Taurus would be the first phase of solidifying and seeding what will become the stable ground for future growth. This may take the form of assessing our health and the physical steps we have taken to insure that we are able to work and play in a vital and viable state. Using the cycle of Earth and those astrological signs of that element the next point of bolstering the energy would be during Virgo. The Solar Month of Virgo stands as the Full phase of the earth’s energy, and signals readiness to sort through, weed and begin careful and meticulous planning for the harvesting of what we have tended to within our physical nature.

The flexible energy of Capricorn (the last of the Earth signs) would serve as the point of gaining sure footing for what we have learned about our human nature. This would take the form of looking back into the depths of what connects us most deeply to the manifest world and then carrying those worthy products upwards towards completion of defining what makes us human. Successfully scaling this final mountain that leads to knowledge of the interface between our humanity and spirituality is achieved, only, by how strong the foundations and anchors we’ve created in the previous Solar Months of Taurus and Virgo have been crafted. As each of these Solar Months take hold the energy of the working is bolstered, concrete and well planned steps would be taken towards its end goal and progress made is seen through the lens of the changing cycles of flow of solar dynamics.

Lunar Magick

Engages the flow of emotion and intuitive insights through the strength and container of manifest, physical and concrete forms.

Use of Lunar energy in the astrological sign of Taurus provides the energetic principle of stabilizing and infusing the emotional waters with seeds for potential life. Workings that desire the goal of strengthening prosperity, health, and all manner of physical possessions aptly make use of Taurus’ qualities of fertility and manifestation. Improvements relating to your physicality, such as exercise programs, becoming more active and more vital in those physical endeavors benefit from Taurean application.

The New Moon of Taurus could set up the foundation for beginning the process of bolstering your finances. This would be a great time to begin a prosperity working. The Full Moon would reinforce the abundance of what has been gained. Attention would be directed to and gratitude for the work’s success and acknowledgement of the concrete steps taken, in addition to the magickal work set in motion would be bolstered and reinforced. And, the Waning Moon’s energy would be used to release any habits that keep you spending in ways that are not supportive of creating abundance. Release of the attitude of lack and any challenges and barriers that you perceive as keeping you less than anchored in your intended goal would also be made.

Some Additional Astrological properties of Taurus

Keywords: Stability, Foundation, Finances, Longevity, Manifestation, Fecundity.

The Archetype: The Farmer is the archetype associated with Taurus. This exemplifies the deep commitment to Earth and all that is contained in this realm. The Farmer is caretaker and grower of what sustains life. He works the land with love and respect, knowing that his actions will either destroy or create. He/She is intimately connected to the seasons and their impact and relies on the wisdom of his own physicality to insure success. It is this ability to know so deeply the materials that are the ingredients in manifest form that make Taurus to be called upon for grounding and proliferation of what is begun.

Rules Astrological House: The 2nd House of the Zodiac, the “House of Possessions”. This is the house that defines you by what you have acquired. Those physical things that allow you comfort and pride in what you have achieved through the physicality of your own endeavors. Financial stability, strength of home and living the life you wish to live surrounded by those things that you possess. Workings that enhance and are in support of that definition of yourself crafted by what is acquired benefit from using Taurus’ energy.

Color: The rich Green of the Natural world. This is the color of the varied shades of green leaf, wet grass and damp moss that cannot be replicated in the potency of its sensorial effect regardless of how skilled the colorist may be. Green is the color of money and the association is one of the financial stability having adequate amounts can provide. Green is the healing color of herbs that are grown to vibrancy and sacrificed in the making of homeopathic and natural preparations. Using this color to align with the energy of Taurus is to re-member and to strengthen the connections we have to the verdant world around us. It is to anchor ourselves in our planetary home and to recall the opening of the senses as you walked through a lush green field of summer green grasses.

Connection and Flow: Aries to Taurus

I am patient and I am persistent
As I move through life’s course.
And within my breast beats
A heart that holds the earth’s
Wisdom and light deep within.

Taurus is the second sign of the Zodiac and following in the enthusiastic outpour of Aries, Taurus stands ready in its place of a fixed sign. The initial burst of enthusiasm (Aries) is now curbed and brought into form by the concrete solid container that is Taurus.

Seasonally, under the potent rays of the Taurus sun the call is to be outdoors and working in the garden and fields; surrounded by the blossoming of plants and new vegetation. The earth is rich and filled with what is needed to produce crops and fragrant flowers. The preparation and necessary quickening of this state of fertility was conceived under the Aries sun. Seeing all potential and enthusiastically taking action to plant the seeds and lend its growing light. The heat contained within and above the earth warms the soil so that it may be the fertile container that holds the mystery of greening life.

Physically, the flow from Aries to Taurus is one of reveling in our physical form. The anticipation of warmer days, and return to the stimulation of earthy pursuits was fired up as Spring opened a attitude of fresh perspective and the promise of thriving with each day. Aries is the infant and toddler learning of their impact on the surroundings. Taurus is the child, digging in the dirt, making mud pies and seeing everything from a sensorial approach, learning from the experience in preparation for communicating everything it knows as it flows into Gemini.

As we move through each of the Solar Temples in the coming year, it will become more apparent how interconnected they are. The story that is woven is one of growth and evolution that is just as relevant today as it was to the ancients. We learn from these natural cycles and their application is profound mundanely and spiritually.

New Moon in Taurus

Sun in Taurus

Solar Eclipse

Early this morning the Moon transited New into the astrological sign of Taurus. This New Moon is in the Fixed sign of Taurus with Sun at mid-point of its transit through the solar month. The opportunity for a new approach of strength and stability to bolster our physical and manifest surroundings is being offered. With Sun and Moon both in Taurus, earthly matters and mundane experience take center stage. How you feel and intuit you way through the mundane experience of life are receptive to reshaping and rebuilding of what anchors them in your physical reality. This is also the optimal space for beginning the work of healing and renewal with specific focus on those physical parts of self that are in a state of dis-ease or need an extra vaccine of immunization to keep everything working order. The Sun offers its light and strength of purpose to brighten up those flowing waters that connect you to the human experience. Financial matters, home affairs and those possessions and things that define your physical presence are the point of focus, as is your physical state and what that presence and persona wishes to make as its mark in the manifest world. There is additionally, a Partial Solar Eclipse occurring with this New Moon.

The Solar Eclipse

A Solar Eclipse occurs only at the time of a New Moon and when the Moon passes between Sun and Earth, partially or fully blocking the sun’s light. I think of this as a veiling of the Sun’s Light with the Moon’s energies acting like the polarized lenses of glasses. You are aware that the sunlight is strong and intensely bright, but the glare has been filtered and the shading serves to bring out the deepest and richest colors and details that would otherwise be lost in the brilliance of the light. Today’s eclipse is a partial one, so being receptive to where that greater detail ebbs and flows as the Moon moves across the path of the Sun of strengthening can give additional insight that is needed to begin the process of gaining more stable ground.

The Winged Bull

The astrological sign of Taurus is the first of the Fixed Modalities and one of the Four Holy Creatures in its elevated form. The Fixed Modality is the mid-station between what is newly birthed in the burst of Cardinal outpouring and what becomes the flexible and pliable essence of synthesis that is the Mutable modality. Each of the four Fixed signs of the Zodiac has within its stable container of structure the potential to reform and transform what enters into it and bring it to its highest expression. These higher forms are one of the meanings of the Four Holy Creatures of esoteric work.

They are:
Taurus- The Winged Bull- Earth
Leo- The Winged Lion- Fire
Scorpio- The Eagle- Water
Aquarius- The Winged Man- Air

We’ll discus each of these more as we move through the solar year. For now, the focus is on Taurus The Winged Bull. I’ve chosen to interject this thought because of the Solar Eclipse and a deeper interaction between the Lunar and the Solar energies than what is usually the norm of the New Moon. The Winged Bull is the raising up of what would hold us rooted only in our physical and baser needs. The animal within would be unproductive in its application and survival at all costs would replace justice, morals and consideration of another’s needs; a few of the attributes that separate man from animal. The strength that we find within the earth and her offerings would be the only place of awareness and our connection to what lay above would remain dormant and un-evolved in its aspiration.

The addition of wings to the pure mass, strength and instinctually driven bull as representation of these attributes allows a perspective of using these as the tools through which all is seen from above giving new points of reference and deeper meaning to our collaborative efforts with what surrounds us. Viewing our surroundings at ground level only offers a limited vantage point of distance. Even the slightest elevation sets into motion broader vantage of sight and interpretation of what has been newly added. The Winged Bull is bringing those aspects that make us most fully human/animal; retaining the strength and beauty of that affirmation and soaring above fully aware and apprised of their role in both spiritual and earthly matters.

The New Moon of Earth’s Lofty Delights

On this New Moon, dig your heels in deeply to what anchors you on this earthly plane as you make the necessary shifts in mundane priorities and the status quo. Stand firmly and with strength in regard to the new course of decision made about what is deserving of your attention in the physical realm. This new approach should meet the tests of feeling secure and stable; act to ground the mental chatter that would create indecisiveness and insecurities and provide new foundations to stand upon with higher vantage point. If all is aligned in a stable and supportive manner with intention of remaining anchored and rooted in what feeds your physical needs, the work done has the potential to bring what is rooted in base needs and manifest reality to a place of inspired intent that soars high above what the initial scope of what manifest form thought was possible.

Note on Image of Taurus, the Bull: This statue of the Winged Bull is found atop a castle in Liege, Belgium, was built by Robert Garcet. The tower-museum is called the Tower of Eben-Ezer. It has seven floors and stands 108 feet high. The four turrets at the corners are topped with magnificent statues. In the Bible, Eben-Ezer is the stone of help, so Garcet chose to top his castle with the four cherubs of the Apocalypse: Taurus, north-west, Man, south-west, the Lion, south-east, and Eagle, the northeast.

Sun in Taurus: An Anchor of Light in the Tree

Posted in The Temple of the Sun, Venus with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on April 27, 2014 by themagickalpen

istock_000015483800medium

My strength flows through leaf and branch
I offer the stability that allows for growth
I am steadfast in my fertility and power to create
My body is the temple that gives life form
My roots dig deeply into anchoring the light
That emanates from Mother’s sacred womb
And Father’s potent seed.

As we enter the Temple of the Sun, Qabalistically we are entering into connection with the central sphere on the Tree of Life, Tiphareth. The name given this sphere is Beauty and the energy is one of synthesis through sacrifice and integration through refinement of the sum of all of its parts. This is much the same energy that we experience in the course of a Solar year. The energy of each of the Zodiacal signs, their elements and modality are modified and expressed through the brilliance of the Sun. And, in keeping with the evolutionary process of movement from one sign to the next, each is informed by the previous sign’s energy and contributes a part of its dynamic into the sign that follows.

Tiphareth and the Sun

Each of the Sephiroth and connecting Paths of the Tree of Life, holds correspondence with a planetary and/or zodiacal energy. The physical Sun stands centrally within our solar system, providing light and heat. Tiphareth provides the space of transformation and the full force generator that distributes what is processed so it may be utilized and transmuted by whatever it emanates its energy into. This is the sacrificial aspect of this sphere. This is the action of enlivening within its own source to ensure the continuation of the creative process begun within the other components of the Tree. So we begin in this central hub of universal energy and move out towards the flow of energy represented by the foundational anchor of the astrological sign of Taurus.

If you are not familiar with the Qabalistic Tree of Life, I would recommend reading through the article posted in my other blog, The Magickal Pen entitled The Might of Geburah to give you the necessary overview for an introductory base of working knowledge about the Tree. It can be found here:

The Magickal Pen: Geburah’s Might

Taurus and Venus on the Tree

Astrologically, we have learned that Taurus is ruled by the planet Venus. Venus also rules the astrological sign of Libra (Air and Cardinal Modality). This bears note when we look at Venus on the Tree. Her planetary energy is found in three places- the sphere of Netzach, Paths 16 and 14. With this duality of astrological rulership, the influence of Air (Libra) and Earth (Taurus) are molded by the energy of relationship, durability and striving towards flow of balance. Although one of these signs may take the lead in directing the expression and form of Venus’ energy, the other is always present as the informing silent partner.

The Foundations of Victorious Venus

On the Tree of Life, the sphere of Netzach holds the pure energy that is the active principle of Venus expressed through earthy Taurus. The English name for this sphere is Victory. The work of Netzach is one of refining and balancing the energies of emotion and response to what has been achieved and what could be considered victorious about that achievement. The sphere of Netzach is the place of establishing the balance of hedonistic and aesthetic ideals. Love is the primary focus, but not at the expense of over indulgence in physical pleasure. These points of focus are all very Taurean in their energy, being firmly and concretely of the physical realms. This is also the place of expression of Love of Nature in all of her forms. The connection between beauty and the energies that are contained within the force of Nature is a strong one. Even in the Natural world’s more disruptive expression, the order and intelligence in design applied in her shaking free from her mantle those disruptions of energy is done with a sense of order, intent and aestheticism. Nature is expressed through Taurus in the overt attribution of an animal, the Bull, to its energies and the dominant theme of physical and manifest expression.

This sphere is noted as the Vision of Beauty (and harmony) of nature and all of its components, human, animal, mineral and plant life. There is also a sense of appreciation of all the finer things and the highest ideals to be achieved. This is present in both the physical concepts of the sphere as well as the spiritual and etheric levels. This is the place of triumph over the baser self. Of organized effort to bring refinement and the orphic delights of the arts to fill the container or structure that is being created before it is released into the place of the intellect that can further define and order it.

Netzach (Venus) and Tiphareth (Sun)

Taurus on Tree

Netzach is assigned the element of Fire as is the Sun of Tiphareth. Within the energy of Netzach we can identity this Fire as that of longing, desire and the impetus that coerces the creative urge towards manifestation. This is the Fire that initially burns very hot and very bright but if not tended carefully will spread out of control and consume that which created it.

Venus’ energy reigns supreme within this sphere with Taurus as an adjunct to that energy and although, Taurus is an Earth sign, the energy of earth is expressed through the Fires of Venusian interactions. Here the theme of Fire is that of the underpinnings that is the molten core within the earth. The Fires that heat the soil to quicken the seeds held within, which in turn stretch upward towards Sun’s light. Although not directly connected via a path that is of Taurean or Venusian dynamic, Tiphareth and Netzach react and radiate one to the other through the 24th Path.

Path 24
A Path of Fire

The 24th Path represents the synthesis of the fire of the heart (Netzach) and strength of sacrifice (Tiphareth) working in dialogue and exchange with one another. If we think in terms of heart felt will and the courage of personality centered sacrifice, this is the action of moving from a place of balanced compassion (Netzach) that willingly offers its energy up to become part of a filtered and transfigured outpour (Tiphareth). The underlying strength of Turaus held in this configuration of Netzach/Venus and the Sun of Tiphareth is the process of regeneration that takes the raw stuff supplied and renews and restores each to its enlivened form.

Temple of Venus: The Victory of Netzach

The 16th Path of Connection: Taurus/Venus

Path16-Taurus

The spheres of Chokmah (Wisdom/The Zodiac) and Chesed (Mercy/Jupiter) are connected by the 16th Path on the Tree of Life. There is great determination (Taurus) held within the 16th Path. It is the upper most support of The Pillar of Mercy and in emanation downwards, what is cultivated within this path is what will later inform the interactions (Venus) between Chesed and Netzach. The energy of Earth (Taurus) within the 16th Path is that of durability, strength and control. The collaborative energies of Wisdom (Chokmah) of the mysteries of the creation of the cosmos(Zodiac) and the Mercy (Chesed) cultivated from experience, choice and expanded(Jupiter) perception from the foundations selected to coalesce these energies that are not only fertile but also prolific in their sustaining powers.

The Hebrew Letter placed on the 16th Path is Vau, which means Nail in English. A nail is used as a tool of binding or attaching one thing to another. The expectation is that this attachment will be durable and long lasting and not easily pried apart. The same is true of the spiritual energy placed upon the 16th Path. As a connecting path on the Pillar of Mercy, this is the path of anchor and endurance. What is cultivated within the merciful being will be elevated to a place of access to what may spawn further creations of this sort. The nail acts to hold firmly these energies so that nothing may separate their dynamic energy as the flow of their combined truths move down into the manifest world of expression.

We could summarize this energy in this way: The stable (Fixed modality) container of Taurus’ manifest form expressed in the refined and creative (Venus) aspect of merciful and benevolent emotion (Chesed) expands from its source (Chesed) and aspires upwards towards the cosmos (Chokmah) to co-mingle with the force of release and seeding (Chokmah) of all that sustains life and maintains order of the heavens and thus by its loving (Venus) reflection also on earth.

Another Path of Expression: Venus on the 14th Path

Path14-Taurus

The planet Venus is placed on the 14th Path, which connects the spheres of Chokmah (Wisdom) and Binah (Understanding). The 14th Path holds the honor of providing the base of the Supernal Triangle of the spheres Binah, Chokmah and Kether. This path is the place of polarization through the actions of Binah (Feminine) and Chokmah’s (Masculine) energies as the conception of what will be brought into manifestation as these coalesced energies emanate from Binah. This flow of energetic exchange is directed and towards a singular goal of unifying what lay in opposition to produce the space of neutrality where positive and negative give pause and ultimately produce the spark of creative outpour. This is the fecundity and fertility of Taurus as it supports the action of Venus.

This path represents the element of Earth (Taurus) raised to the level of Divine action. Form has become formless in its ascent and what we conceive of as foundational earth, its structure and all of its evolving components have now evolved as the support and structure required for the blending of male and female, positive and negative, force and form. We think of earth as being the strength and the constant through which viable substance may pass and yield the fruits of that fertility. This is also true of the 14th Path. Through the support and structure of this path the fruits of emanation are yielded.

In Conclusion:

If we consider the attributes of Taurus and its ruling planet Venus and their impact on the Tree of Life the prominent focus is one of anchoring in the physical experience. Taurus is the reminder of the joys and power in being manifest in form and having the ability to recreate that form of manifestation. This is the space of fertility and the creation of an anchor of stabilizing and immovable (remember the stubborn Bull) nature of digging deeply in and strengthening the roots.

As the light of Tiphareth (Sun) shines brightly and radiates its vision of magnetic attraction throughout the multilayered branches of a tree that reaches far and wide in its expanse and impact Taurus reaches deeply into the fertile soil crafting the foundational work that once begun takes root and spreads into all facets of your mundane experience.

A Fiercely Beating Heart: The Sun in Taurus

Temple of Sun-Taurus
Sun in Taurus

4.19.2014

Planetary Ruler: Venus

A Fiercely Beating Heart

Strength unmoved as dust swirls
Around the stamping of hoof.
Fire rages in the heart and
Coils of fevered breath move from
Chamber of lung and throat
Weaving between air’s stagnant web.

I am earth, solid and great
In purpose and my strength
Is held and guided by a heart that beats
Fiercely to the rhythm of love.

I will stand my ground in
Defense of the truths I perceive.
And, if provoked will
Charge with intent and
Precise aim as I relentlessly
Pursue the source of irritation.

Some would see me as impetuous
And easily stoked to irrational rage
And others would say I was immovable
Stagnant and set in my ways.

Both would be true
For my impetuosity comes
From being firmly grounded and
My grounding takes shape from
The flashes of inspiration I explore.

I am patient and I am persistent
As I move through life’s course.
And within my breast beats
A heart that holds the earth’s
Wisdom and light deep within.

The astrological sign of Taurus is one of the element of Earth and the Fixed Modality. Taurus is also the first of the fixed signs which have dual meaning as the Four Holy Creatures (More on this in a special posting). Its planetary ruler is Venus, whose greater mystery is one of relationship and coming to a place of acceptance of all parts of your being. The natural energy of the Sun, that of shedding great light on whatever is in its spectrum is now poured into the earthy realms of what strives towards stability and structure through the power of great strength. This solar month has maximum potential for firming up what means we use and how we define ourselves as physical beings. The caution is one of remaining too long in standing your ground and holding onto to false definitions simply because you do not wish to disrupt the comfort of the status quo.

The Element of Earth

The energy of Earth is creation of a solid foundation and deep connection to the physical world. Expressed through the sign of Taurus, Earth presents in a stalwart and at times stubborn approach, remaining steadfast and strong in conviction and opinion. Earth is the energy of the magnet that attracts to itself what it sends forth. Because earth defines the manifest world and all that is contained within, it draws to itself the power of manifestation itself and with the bolster of the Sun’s light and strength enhancing this fertile potency what is yielded becomes both the defender and the aggressor for what can be accomplished in manifest creation.

A Fixed Modality

The energy of the Fixed signs is one of stability that occurs in natural response to the initial burst (Cardinal modality) of movement disbursed by the sign preceding it. This holding space becomes one of permanence that functions then as the center point of synthesis and refinement of what has come into its field of dynamic form.

Hold steady
Stand strong
Be the container.

Hold fast the
Energy that pours
Forth relentlessly.

The Middle Way
Proves firm and true
What generates inside
Soars above and
Reaches deeply below.

Draw up its strength
Pull down its light
Draw in its anchor of center
And allow to pour forth that
Which will be renewed.

The Fixed energy of Earthy Taurus is that of the place of grounding the fires that had been sparked and set anew by Aries. The symbol of the Bull for the Taurus is aptly expressed as holding its ground, ensuring that what comes into its space will receive the appropriate attention and focus of energy to bring it into manifestation. This attribution also relates to those things which connect us most deeply to the natural world and all that is gifted through physical manifestation. It is for this reason that all of the earth signs of the zodiac hold key to mastery of the mundane. Finances and those things that are acquired through our physical efforts are all enhanced by the natural fertility and potential for manifest expression that the Earth itself holds.

The Next Step

Taurus is the second sign of the Zodiac and following in the
enthusiastic outpouring of Aries, Taurus stands ready in its place of a fixed sign. The initial burst of enthusiasm (Aries) is now curbed and brought into form by the concrete solid container that is Taurus. Being a fixed sign, its nature is to hold strong and steady, albeit, immovable at times. This center of the road strength can generate a stable base from which growth of material endeavors flourishes and survives even in the most turbulent of circumstances. The symbol for Taurus is a bull. The choice of this particular animal gives great clue to the innate qualities of Taurus. Strength, sure footedness and earthiness by virtue of its sheer size offer the potential for an individual, who is stalwartly and commanding in their presence.

Venus is the Ruling Planet of Taurus. The energy of Venus is that of beauty, harmony and awakening the emotional self. It is the heart that yearns for romance and connection. This energy supports social interaction and the overwhelming goal is to connect at a deep and often intimate level with those of our choosing. A natural love of beauty and great sense of aesthetic style enhance the home life and material endeavors of Taurus.

Preparing the Way

At this time of the year in the Northern hemisphere, we see the potency of Taurus expressed as the earth greens Herself in preparation for Father Sun’s waxing heat. The vibrancy of the Sun and its strength of Taurean energy pours deeply into the earth itself. The work of Aries (and the Spring Equinox) was one of seeding and attracting the sun’s light and flame into the earth to enable the first buds to sprout. Taurus is the earthy container that will provide the anchor and prepare the way for each seed to blossom in its own way.

In the Southern Hemisphere the emphasis is the reversed as all make preparation for the waning of the Sun’s light. What had begun to be gathered as balanced harvest (The Fall Equinox) is now turned into the manifest forms of what will be sustenance during the winter. Grain becomes bread, vegetables are stored and preserved. What is taken from the earth and the fires of energy expended in reaping its product is stabilized and the planned rest of remaining steady in resolve is taken as the container is formed for productive result.

Both are held in the steadiness and determination of Taurus and the strength and enlivening of Father Sun directing its focus. The goal is one of preparing and stabilizing the way for the next phase of growth and expansion when the Sun transits next into the Mutable sign of Gemini.

A Fiercely Beating Heart

This solar month is one of opportunity to dig deeply into the stores of your own resolve, purely for the sake of safeguarding and building upon them the foundation of what you hold as your place in the physical world. In the chronology of the Zodiac, this is the growth from the impetuosity of Aires fires into one of growing stability through the anchoring of Taurus. This is the work of the adolescent; learning their impact on the physical world that surrounds them and the point of holding firm in what they believe to be true of the world. This is also the time of testing what you know of your physical nature. The questions of the adolescent seek to know what each day will bring in experience. The future is one of trying on various costumes through play and imagination. These are the stuff that becomes the plans for what is finally settled upon as the child matures and readies for college and work. The mud pies created become the culinary delights of the master pastry chef. The fairy crown of leaf, dirt and flowers becomes the fashionista’s desire as designer sets to cloth the garments of the imagination.

And, so in the spirit of Taurus and as we call forth the energy of the Sun as it continues its zodiacal cycle, I repeat the invocation that opened the Gate to this Temple. As you read through it think back to your adolescence and the stubborn and at time rebellious qualities you exhibited. Think back to digging into the earth searching for those gems of worm and insect or planting your first garden. Think back to the experience of full, healthy physical body running endlessly in the pure joy of anticipation of what lay beyond. Think back to the smells of the fresh damp soil as you rest lying in soft grass looking up at clouds moving swiftly overhead and feeling the fiercely beating heart that affirmed your youth, physicality and life. This is your strength and your foundation as you re-anchor and invoke the Solar power of this month in Taurus as you awaken those fires of RA within your own Earth’s center core.

Hymn to RA

All Hail to Thee, Mighty RA
Blaze of noon day sun.
Your fiery orb high in the
Sky above as we kneel
Beneath the heat of
Your radiance.

All the Gods bow to your radiance
All the Goddesses sing hymns of praise
To Your glory and man
Lays prostrate in humility
And devotion at the altar of
Your making.

Sweet music of adoration and offerings
Brought forth from the Black Land
Rise up in praise and thanks for
Your Sustaining Light.

All darkness flees at the touch of Your hand
All ceases its movement as Your expansive
Rays stretch across the morning sky.

The lotus opens to receive Your Touch
And the sands glisten as rare jewels
As You gaze upon each grain washed
Clean in the boundless ocean that
Reflects the brilliance of your face.

All Hail to Thee
Amun-RA
All Hail to Thee
Who sits high
Above the world.

Khepra in the East
Atum in the West
Whose eye holds the
Point of Life and the
Trifold Arc of Power.

Your eyes see all and
You are the place of return
Within the glowing blackness
Of the Midnight Sun.

All Hail to Thee
All Hail to Thee
Amun, Amun, Amen!

Full Moon in Libra

3:42a.m. (EDT)

Total Lunar Eclipse Begins 3:07am (EDT)

The Moon is Full in the early morning hours of April 15th in the astrological sign of Libra with a total Lunar Eclipse punctuating the energetic experience. This combination offers the potential for some very powerful and deep spiritual work.

A Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the shadow of the Earth as it is lit from behind by the Sun. The usual orbit of the Moon is just far enough off the Earth/Solar plane that the Moon makes its journey avoiding the shadow of the Earth casts.  The eclipse places the Sun directly behind the Earth as the Moon moves into the position within Earth’s shadow. This early morning eclipse will be a Total Eclipse meaning that the Moon passes through the entirety of the Earth’s shadow from 3:07am to 4:25am. The refraction of light occurring from the filtering of earth’s atmosphere as light shines directly from the Sun behind the earth causes a natural progression of changing the moon’s coloring from the creamy white of a normal Full Moon to a reddish brown coloring of the moon as the eclipse event takes place. The Moon returns to its milky whiteness as She basks in the full shining of Sun upon her face.

LEDiagram1c

For lots of great information about eclipses and, in particular this eclipse go to: mreclispse.com.  This site has everything you want to know about the astronomy of Solar and Lunar Eclipses.

If we consider the spiritual implications of the eclipse energy we are able to call upon the energies of Will (Sun), Manifestation and Foundation (Earth) and intuitive Heart (Moon). In the placement of the Lunar Eclipse, Earth receives the direct outpouring of the sun’s energy as its reflective back light of emanation towards the Moon’s surface. Divine Will (our Spiritual Sun) is brought to a place of manifest and practical use as we, as physical beings, are especially enlivened by its solar principle and dynamic of energy.

The reflection of this shadow of light emanates out towards the moon in her phase of fullness through the filter of Earth (and opportunity to bring it to manifestation). This refraction of sun’s light refines the matters of heart and quickens in a subtle yet profound way of application as it passes through the earth shadow of our form imbuing the Full Moon energy with the hidden resources of what lay at our inner sun’s core. Drawing this light shadow that holds the mysteries of our internal lunarscape into the intuitive waters that flow in the intermittent dimming (the frequency of the Lunar Eclipses) of its full potential provides the space of accessing those qualities that strengthen the aspects of our manifest nature that lay in the shadows and enliven these by emotional and intuitive insight so they may be used in a more practical manner as they are brought to the fullness of their potential. Who we are in the strength (Sun) of our manifest form (Moon) and the will we call forth empowers these deep waters of our intuitive nature (Moon).

Now, add the astrological component. The Moon is Full in the Cardinal sign Libra. Libra is depicted as the Scales of balance. Refinement and love of the intellectual nature of calibrating the scales of balance to maintain that balance is the type of mental gymnastics the Air (Intellect/mind) sign of Libra enjoys. The Full Moon ushers in the highest potential and peak of whatever energy it is reflecting, so heart infused by refined emotions and intuition honed by informed trial and error are at hand.

The emphasis of balance that Libra exerts is enhanced by this Total Lunar Eclipse. The polarities of Male (Sun) and Female (Moon) that are present in the opposition of Sun and Moon that occurs during a full moon are both subdued in their synthesis at the level of manifestation(Earth). In this case, the extremes of the natural flow of Sun and Moon are brought to the mid-point of Earth, standing as synthesizer of the two. This is the purposeful and modulated conversation between a pair of opposites (Sun and Moon) that has similar goal and each is willing to compromise (Libra) in its application and civilized assertion of its needs and desires so that something reflecting the harmonious (Libra) values of each may be initiated (Cardinal Modality) towards manifest form (Earth).

In spiritual working, making full use of these varied dynamics of a Full Moon and a Lunar Eclipse offers opportunity to reshape and refine what we think about those qualities of heart that lie just below the surface of what we normally express to inform our human experience. This action allows the calling forth of the informed intent to bring them into a state of balance and harmonious expression in our daily affairs. And, all works collaboratively in a balanced state knowing that strength of Divine Will (Sun) continually flows in support as the back lighting for the ebb and flow (Moon) of these energies as the foundational (Earth) work that the shadow of our inner creative Will to Manifest brings to the surface.

Sparks Flying! Mars Alignment

Tuesday, April 8.2014

Today there will be a rare alignment of Mars, Earth and the Sun. As each moves to their respective place within this line of energetic dialogue, the energy of each individually becomes more a singular stream of flow holding their unique coding of transformative change. The astronomy behind the alignment is not my area of expertise nor my focus, but what significance and use of its energies spiritually are.

With any alignment (or aspect) we have the energies of all of the players acting in a dynamic way with one another. In this case, we have two attributed to the element of Fire (Mars/Sun) and one holding the center point of grounding and space of manifestation (Earth). In the earlier posts for this solar month we found that Mars is the ruling planet of the current solar month’s astrological sign of Aries. We’ve also discussed the opportunities held when the planet of reference is in the opposite astrological sign from whatever is the dominant energy. Mars is currently in the astrological sign of Libra- the sign of opposition to Aries. So, there is a natural tension in this alignment between the Solar Month of Aries and its zodiacal ruling planet of Mars in the sign directly opposing it.

The Sun in Aries is approximately mid-point in its cycle and the energy is one that is maturing from the earlier degrees of placement when the sun began its transit through this sign. There is a growing stability that comes from the calming down of impetuous and newly begun action and the realization of its greater impact on something more than itself as it gains momentum and the past experience to draw its lessons from.

Mars, in its place of opposition, is in the astrological sign of Libra, the Scales of Balance. Libra is of the element of Air, which provides the balance of conscious will to action in contrast to Aries primal and fiery urge to action. When tempered with information the Ariean desire to do, to move, to achieve can be placed exactly as needed and the Mars energy of assertion can be called upon to form the fires of courage and determination necessary for follow through. Both draw upon the brilliance of Sun’s light to infuse their desired goal with the structure and the furnace to allow this fire to build in both an electromagnetic way of attraction and flares of release as the rays of illumined effort pour out as residual.

Additionally, Mars has been retrograde since March 1st and remains so until turning direct on May 19th. Essentially, wherever we normally vacillate between what is our productively assertive self and what becomes aggressive brutality (whether inflicted upon ourselves or others) has been put to the test. Those moments when we have felt the fires rise and anger take the reins or felt our faith and truth in action guide the way towards affecting change through purposeful intent have been the intensity of Mars exacting its scrutiny upon our will. Change is not an easy road and ultimately something must always be left by the wayside or trampled in its wake but this is Mars prime directive and the results if its energy is applied justifiably can be those that raise the Spirit of humanity and the cornerstones of an evolved collective consciousness.

Earth in alignment between the two, becomes the place of grounding and haven from the potent dynamics of electrical current generated from the tension between the Sun and Mars. Earth holds the key to the mystery of manifesting what the creation fires of willful creation give birth to. If called into action and we allow our physical state of being to be transformed by the potent flames of will and illumined strength, the result is one of sparks flying and the tool of transformation is applied and the welding of what becomes our foundational armor of courage, action, and infused will towards manifest goal and desire.

I see this as a time to allow the space of courage within myself to let those fires that have been urging me towards action to take hold. To allow the flow of balance between what I desire most and what my informed route of acquisition will be. How will you allow opposites to attract and the sparks to fly as you plug into the cosmic motherboard?

A Little Gem Of Information:

We do not normally give consideration to what astrological sign the EARTH is in when we look at natal charts, etc. This is largely because our perspective of the heavens and what is contained is from the perspective of looking up from planet Earth. IF we lived on Saturn or Mars, Earth would be a relevant component. Nonetheless, there is an interesting dynamic that is used in Esoteric Astrology and the Earth and its astrological signs. To calculate its sign is as simple as knowing that there is exactly a 180-degree opposition to the Sun. Meaning that since my natal Sun is in Aquarius, Earth in my chart is in Leo, the sign directly opposite.

Why am I bringing this up? Because Mars is in the sign directly opposite the Sun in Aries. And, Earth, which is art of this trio is also in the opposing sign to Aries. This means, Mars (Will) and Earth (Manifestation) are in collaboration in the sign of Libra, striving for informed balance of will and action. Earth then becomes the interface and ultimate place of refining and bringing to equilibrium the dialogue between two states of force (Mars and the Sun) that hold the potential for resolution through manifest form (Earth).

Sun in Aries: New Life on the Tree

If you are not familiar with the Qabalistic Tree of Life, I would recommend reading through the article posted in my other blog, The Magickal Pen entitled The Might of Geburah to give you the necessary overview for an introductory base of working knowledge about the Tree. It can be found here:

The Magickal Pen: Geburah’s Might

Aries on the Tree

Each of the Sephiroth and connecting Paths of the Tree hold correspondence with a planetary and/or zodiacal energy. So we begin in this central hub of universal energy and move out towards the flow of energy represented by the astrological sign of Aries.

Aries and Mars

The Ruling planet of Aries is Mars. On the Tree of Life, the sphere of Geburah holds the pure energy that is the active principle of Mars. The work of Geburah is one of culling and release of what no longer serves. If we think of this in application to Aries and the youthful energy exemplified, we could equate this description with the impetuous nature of youthful energy, and in this state of impetuosity viable matter may be discarded and overlooked as not be relevant. To some degree this speaks to lack of experience about what something of value looks like and some is just simply the by-product of “haste makes waste”. The paradox of this is that often what unintentionally is left behind becomes the base that is used to create something incredibly useful. Sometimes we need to see with the eyes of one whose only directive is to enjoy the process as they go along and be utterly amazed by where it leads.

Geburah is also attributed as having the Vision of Power. Aries, when infused with the boldness and brilliance of the Sun’s energy can become the great catalytic force that runs through the initial quickening of inventive action, mind and heart. The power that is exerted can be directed and focused in a specific way to be used as a tool of inspiration. Think of the captivating power of a newly born baby and the feelings evoked in celebration of this new life. Think of the encouraging power of one who so utterly and faithfully believes in your success that it becomes your self-fulfilling prophecy, carefully and skillfully reinvented with each new achievement.

The 22nd Path of Connection: Aries/Mars and the Sun

Path22 Aries

The spheres of Geburah (Mars) and Tiphareth (The Sun) are connected by the 22nd Path on the Tree of Life. Each of the connecting paths on the Tree acts as the bridge of synthesis between the spheres of connection and their pure essence. Additionally, each path has a Hebrew Letter designated as expression of its energy. The Hebrew Letter for the 22nd Path is Lamed, which means Ox-Goad. An ox-goad is a tool used to prod the animal towards movement so that the necessary work may be accomplished. This is the action achieved through the balance of rest and work; providing the space for energy to build and the space for that energy to be used productively towards an end goal. This is the path of conduit that draws from each of its sources and sets up the dialogue of beginning between the Mars energy of Aries (Geburah) and the Sun (Tiphareth). The result is expressed something like this:

The ebullient (Cardinal modality) outpouring of Aries’ kick-starter dynamic is tempered, synthesized and reformatted within the energy of the Sun’s strengthening and structure (Tiphareth). And, once having received the application of the Sun’s light returns back into Aries’ fuel line as premium grade readying the vehicle of its transport to blaze those new trails, recharged, energized and ever mindful of the new horizons ahead.

Another Path of Expression: Aries on the 15th Path

15thPath Aries1

The astrological sign of Aries, proper, is placed on the 15th Path, which connects the spheres of Chokmah (Wisdom) and Tiphareth (Beauty). We now know more of Tiphareth’s (Sun’s) energy on the Tree and this, in relation to the maturity of Chokmah is what the goal of aspiration is for Aries as it comes to its later degree before transiting into the stability of Taurus. The Hebrew Letter placed on the 15th Path is Heh, which means Window in English. A window allows light to pass through it or to be reflected from its surface. We may stand safely behind it, remaining hidden if desired, from the rest of the world and stand as observer or call out to passers-by making our presence fully known.

We now see Aries as the beginning of the zodiacal wheel and have equated that with the chronological expression of infancy through early childhood. At some point the young child develops a greater acumen of the impact of their actions and learns to control (albeit, still not completely) some of their earlier impulses as they begin to interact from a broader knowledge that others have needs as well. The placement of Aries upon this path forms the initial stages of understanding that we are part of something larger than ourselves and as such we must begin the steps towards building the more mature foundations of who we will become. The wisdom of Chokmah is one that realizes that we should not abandon the enthusiasm, desire and inquisitiveness of our younger selves but should instead use that as the initial impulse to synthesize and bring to greater clarity the knowledge and wisdom of our shining selves (Sun) in the full glory of the openness and receptivity of the child (Aries).

In Conclusion:

There is much I have omitted here regarding the Spheres and Paths of the Qabalistic Tree; especially through the lens of the Solar Year and the potential held in the melding of the two disciplines of Astrology and Qabalah. As we move through the year, you will have at its end the basic tools of knowledge to pursue further study of either or both as you wish. And, in the spirit of Aries there is always another new experience to be explored, tested and added towards your growth into a mature and whole spiritual being.

Planetary Ruler: Mars

Seed of New Beginnings
Time of sweet release
Breath of untainted newness
Tiny embers strewn beneath soft
Blanket of newborn’s down.

Fingers dipping excitedly-
Eagerly in all that can be found
Anticipation of new discoveries and
Child-like innocence fuels the
Thirst and inquisitive nature.
Of one who seeks a place
At the table of life’s experience.

All turn towards the promise
of life restored anew
And the quaternary of balance
infused with Luna’s light opens
the causeway after the challenge
of being is sealed.

All hold pause and heed the warning
Of youth’s impetuous step
The fool, signaling the issuance of
Travesty or achievement.

And, in the space of quiet calm
Between the contractions of labored new birth
The Universe holds vigil
As star and planet follow
Evolution’s plan~ held in the rapture
Of consummate union.

Sparks of will come bursting forth and
Sphere of cobalt radiance crowns slowly
Mother Universe suckles youth at her breast
As Father Time waits patiently
The Celestial wheel moves once again
Within the primordial womb.

The astrological sign of Aries is one of the element of Fire and the Cardinal Modality. Its planetary ruler is Mars and it holds the distinguished position of being the first sign of the zodiac. We learned a bit about the natural energy of the Sun, itself and its fiery nature so it is fitting that a catalyzing astrological Fire sign being expressed through the eye of the Sun would be the dominant energy of Spring (Northern Hemisphere) or Fall (Southern Hemisphere).

The Element of Fire

The energy of Fire is will to Action. In Aries this fire takes the form of the first sparks of flame that are not quite at their fullest, but hold the seed potential, and if directed and guided will go on to fuel the larger blaze. This energy is the fuel that powers exploration, enthusiasm and taking a look from a freshly enlivened perspective. Aries is the quintessential path of action bringing the dynamics of each step taken in the spirit of blazing new trails and enjoying each of the paths taken.

A Cardinal Modality

The energy of the Cardinal Modality is one of beginnings. This is the space of the bubbling up of the tiny fount of waters that pushes through to carve out what will become a steady flow. This is the space of the first stirrings of a breeze that gathers strength of force and becomes the winds that move strong and palpably. Cardinal energy of Fiery Aries is that of the first sparks that seek to become a larger fire that will warm, provide light and clear the way for new experience. As with any spiritual fire, in the application of Aries dynamics there is often a large boost of energy, will and action at the onset. This is the enthusiasm of newness and for this enthusiasm to remain viable, the wisdom of growing maturity (remember, Aries is the youth of the zodiac) must take hold and guide the course towards creating those fires of transformation (the next Fire Sign, Leo).

Let’s Begin

Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac, and in holding this starting place can be equated with new life and the heralding of potential that has not yet acquired the experience of years and maturity in outlook. This is not to say that those under the influence of this sign are immature and lack experience, but rather that they bring a certain level of newness and innocence to any endeavor. The energy of Aries is that of looking out from the eyes of a curious child who sees multiple possibilities and new adventure everywhere bringing an inquisitive nature and youthful energy. Having the quality of a Cardinal Modality bolsters this enthusiastic nature for beginning new projects and looking at things through a fresh (and not yet biased) perspective.

Mars is the Ruling Planet of Aries. This is the combustible force that propels this sign forward. It is a justifiable assertion of itself that puts the plan in motion and irrational aggressiveness that serves as the tantrum of a child wanting attention and not receiving what is needed, before they can move on to their next creative project.

The Balance of the Equinox

At this time of the year we see the Fires of Aries expressed in two forms; both ultimately striving towards that state of balance (the Equinoxes) where there is ample pause to allow the fires to take root. In the Northern Hemisphere we celebrate the balance of the Spring Equinox. This the drawing of the heat and flame into the earth to enable the first buds of what will be the abundance of beauty, life and food. In the of Southern Hemisphere the emphasis is on the Fall Equinox and the beginnings of the harvest. These fires are the driving force towards the action of selectiveness that spurs on the will to action before what product should be harvested withers and dies. Both are balanced by the healing of night and the flame of day as the work of Aries youthful energy rallies towards new growth or provides the back bone for the work of reaping.

Birth Rite:

This solar month is one of opportunity to stoke the fires of a new cycle. We have the triplicity of Fire all working collaboratively:

The Youthful Desire of Aries carving new paths
The Potency of Father Sun strengthening our will
The Sage application of Fiery Mars that drives us towards purposeful action

And, so in the spirit of Aries, I repeat the invocation that began this exploration. As you read through it think back to your younger years and the raw enthusiasm that you felt as each day brought a new adventure and opportunity to learn something new. Think back to the fires that burned fresh and clear as you felt invincible and powerful with youthful vibrancy and energy. This is your birth rite and as you read through the writing of your own story remember the Solar power of this month as Aries catalyzes your inner fires of RA.

Sun in Aries
3.20.2014

Today is a particularly auspicious day. In addition to the Sun’s Transit into Aries and the start of a new zodiacal cycle, it is International Astrology Day, the Spring Equinox and on a personal note, my twin daughters’ birthday. All of these occurrences bringing a strong energy of focus on today, March 20.2014! The invocation to RA above demonstrates the potency and regal nature of the solar principle and it is in the Spirit of this energy that we will travel the Greater cycle of the Sun as we move through its many faces clothed in the intent and style of each of the astrological signs.

These posts will be broken down into 4/weekly offerings to include:

* The primary energy of the astrological sign (posting on the date of Transit)

* New Moon Magick (posting on the date of lunation)

* Magickal Overlays Pt. 1- Qabalah and Tarot (Sunday)

* Magickal Overlays Pt. 2- Numerology and more (Sunday)

Because we are just entering the Temple of the Sun, there will be five posts this solar month. Today’s post will explore the dynamics of the Sun itself and an additional post on Sunday will discuss the application of the astrological sign Aries as the ruler of this solar month. The number 5 is an appropriate way to begin this journey, as it is the number of disruptive and transformative change, both of which are two of the intentions for this solar study.

The Sun

As pagans, we are continually reminded of and work with the energies and mysteries of the Moon. We have ritual, offer devotion and live in the light and through the cycles of Her many phases. By contrast, the Solar Mysteries are generally continued within the Sabbats and the occasional working that requires the assistance of a solar deity. Doing work that will deepen and strengthen our connection to both of these cycles establishes a point of balance that is informed by the strengths of each and the interweaving of their subtleties to produce work that is synthesized and illumined by light and dark.

The Sun is the brightest star in the heavens. In esoteric matters we often hear reference of the Sun behind the Sun or the Midnight Sun.  It is both celestial body, physical in its energy and impact and archetypal in its energy as Deity, energetic force and place of primal force that holds the mystery of creation.

There are many attributions that are given to the Sun. in magickal work, we think of the sun’s energies in the forms it takes as the solar deities we work with, the heat and light the sun provides at a physical and manifest level and the impact of the solar meridians and chakra on our subtle energetic anatomy. As the polarity to the feminine intuitive and healing Lunar qualities, we see the power of the Sun as the masculine strength that is woven through folklore, mythology and the vastness of the varied and diverse spiritual streams. The Sun stands at the central core of all of our workings. It is the dynamic fire that fuels our will towards intent and acts as the combustible source that enlivens whatever that working may be.

These are just a few of the ways we make connection with the archetypes of the Sun. Regardless of what form these solar energies take, the underpinning keys that hold true are those of strengthening, enlivening and ultimately transforming anything held in its power. There is, as well, the timely caution to not stray too close to the full potency of the light of the sun lest it burn the fragile skin we are contained within. In counter to that we also carry the lessons of the Phoenix, whose sole (soul) work is that of the destruction of itself, reduction to the refined essence of its components and the rising up from the ash of flesh and bone to be reborn anew. Let’s take a closer look at some of these vehicles of change.

In ritual and magickal or devotional work we call to the Deities that will best inform and serve what we hope to manifest. The solar deities are those who are called forth to enliven, strengthen and ignite change in a very specific and transmutive way. The Egyptian Solar God, RA reigned supreme and took many forms, including that of the rising and setting of the physical Sun, the sustainer of all life. Each aspect held the key to another level of transformation that those who followed the energy of his Solar flame could hope to lay claim to. The Celtic Goddess, Brighid as a solar deity was keeper of the sacred triple flame and ignited the creative spark in her seekers. Her blade was one of healing that cauterized that which had been excised. She was mistress of the Forge and as such applied the heat of her action to temper the malleable steel of our form and bathed it in the soothing waters too cool and set what had been crafted. The Greek God, Helios was considered to be the Sun itself, traveling much like RA through the day lit sky in a chariot drawn by fire breathing horses. These are the Gods/desses that light the way and blaze the path towards transformation. In ceremonial work, the Liber Resh Vel Helios was written for members of Aleister Crowley’s Order to be performed four times daily as devotional and adoration of the Sun. Its intent was that of focus of the mental process from a heliocentric view, greater connection to the energies of the sun and attunement to The Great Work.

At the level of spiritual evolution and transformation of the energetic bodies it is the solar connection that assists in the building of a Light enlivened physical or manifest body. This energy is gifted through the Etheric body via the vital force gathered from the sun. This energy of the sun presents in three streams of force:

• The Fohat which is the physical manifestation of electricity and of the electromagnetic state in application. This form of solar energy directly impacts the neurological systems of the body that, in turn stimulate and open the pathways of communication, both at physical and spiritual levels.

• The flow of Prana, which provides a state of vitality to the body and is the penultimate and primary life force that transforms the fluids of the body.

• The Kundalini or serpent Fire that transmutes, refines and quickens the impact of the Endocrine System. It is the union of the solar and lunar pathways working each in accord and in friction with the other that sends the life force upwards to nourish and flow through the pathways of the 7-Stars (aka: the glands/organs of the Endocrine system).

In energetic practice, it is the action of calling upon the accumulated Fohat that serves to enliven the individual’s Prana that can then in turn be used to raise and quicken the Serpent Fires of the Kundalini. As this polarized flow of energy of both the lunar and solar currents is pulled up into the crown center, it bathes the pineal glands in its milky elixir and acts as interface to opening to cosmic and expanded consciousness.

At the level of the Chakras- the vortices of energy that draw in and emit the refined spiritual light, the Sun is associated with the Solar Plexus. This chakra is the core center of our inner sun or seat of great power. It is within the solar plexus that awareness of the raising of energy is first noticed. It sits at the center of gravitational balance, keeping us strong and secure in our footing as we move forward. And, it is this chakra that acts to energize and strengthen our actions and fires of will. If engaged fully it is the opener of the heart center of compassion and works in conjunction with the throat center so that will, heart and mind are expressed in an effective manner.

In the overlay of the system of the Qabalah, the sun stands as the central sephira (sphere) of the Tree of Life as Tiphareth. This is the place of sacrifice and reassembling from the wisdom of the inpouring of the other spheres of connection that enter and pass through Tiphraeth. It is the sphere of Beauty, the beauty being held in the synthesis and transmutation by application of the solar principle. On ascending the Tree towards the Godhead of Kether (The Limitless All) the next sphere of connection is Geburah on the Pillar of Might. The heat of the sun is now aligned with the cauterizing blade of the surgeon that cleaves to heal. In descent towards the manifest realm of Malkuth (Foundation) Tiphareth pours into Netzach on the Pillar of Mercy, the fires of refinement. The Solar Principle is gathered here as the soon to be manifest form is fired in the kiln’s of selective balance and desire to create. And on the Middle Pillar of the Tree Tiphareth reaches up through knowledge (Da’At) and the resultant self-awareness to return to the formless source of Kether. On return circuit, the solar energy of Tiphareth reaches down into the sphere of Yesod, affecting discernment and exerting will that is devoid of illusion and misdirection as it is brought into the physical world.

Astronomically, at the time of the Solstices and the Equinoxes we are offered the dynamics of bringing a state of balance between the polarities of sun and moon; night and day. The solstices herald the dominance of one over the other, still being ever mindful of the need for each to maintain this cycle of excess and release. The equinoxes provide a dynamic of seeing solar (day) and lunar (night) in harmonious balance, each providing the pause of equilateral tension as the movement into waxing or waning begins anew.

There are as many ways to attune to this cycle as there are the overlays and characteristics that comprise it. I routinely use these energies in my daily spiritual practice. This may take the form of simply sitting outside at lunchtime and calling into myself the spiritual (Prana) and physical (Fohat) energy of the Sun. I breathe in the rays of the sun, pulling them into the Solar Plexus and then exhaling them into distribution throughout my body. I envision this process radiating out ad into all of my subtle bodies. I have used crystals to hold the specific energy of the sun for later use in ritual work calling upon a Solar Deity’s assistance in quickening the start of a new project. This is particularly effective during a solar eclipse; bringing together a sphere that has been charged with the building lunar energies and another holding the energies of the solar cycle. This eclipse only occurs when the moon is in its New Phase, and is signified by the passing of the moon between the earth and the Sun. I can call upon this combination of energy to create the pathway of the Sun strengthening the heart’s desire (The Moon) as it aligns with the manifest plane of earth.

A few years ago, our Coven embarked on a deepening of our understanding and use of the solar mysteries in a year-long plan. We used as our foundation the Egyptian Pantheon and the cycle of RA and the movement of the Solar Barque (Solar Boat) across the sky through specially crafted rituals. We honored Khepra-Ra at the Vernal Equinox as keeper of the Dawn and new beginnings. We invoked Amum-RA at the Summer Solstice as quickener and peak solar force of noon. The Autumnal Equinox held the energy of RA-Atum in the solar form of Dusk and the setting of the sun to rest and integrate what had been enlivened. And, we entered the Du’at at Samhain in preparation for the calling forth of the Midnight Sun at the time of the Winter Solstice. The products of this work were an uplifting of the foundations we had laid towards a better understanding of the primal nature of the solar energies and their impact in all of our workings.

I have included at the beginning of this introductory post an invocation that I wrote years ago that was used at the start of the Solar Mysteries cycle of workings. If you are so inclined, make formal dedication to this study and feel free to use this invocation as an opening to the Gateway of an energy that is potent in its outpouring and serves to inform and illuminate all aspects of our being. In Solar Light!

Full Moon in Leo

Sun in Aquarius

Mercury Retrograde

The Moon is full in the astrological sign of Leo tomorrow. Leo is of the Fixed Modality and the element of Fire. The ruling planet is the Sun, so light and the pursuit of being in the spotlight are some of the motivations of Leo’s energy. In the phase of a Full Moon, the astrological signs of Sun and Moon are opposing in their energies. What that means is that the Sun is in the astrological sign directly opposite the sign of the Moon on the Zodiacal wheel. This alignment or aspect is the basis for the theories of conflict with signs of opposition. There is a natural tension that occurs between the two signs, each of a differing element yet of the same modality. Something like the family that shares biological (modality) lineage but each has their own specific personality (element) that is not always harmonious with the others but shares common experience.  I see these points of opposition as opportunities for great growth and potential for harmonizing the Lunar (intuitive/emotional) with the Solar (will/intent and desire). In the case of this month’s Sun and Moon, both are in fixed signs which offers support, stability, synthesis and the potential for structure.

This February Full Moon holds the energy of Sun in the Air sign of Aquarius and the Moon in the intensity of Fiery Leo. We all know the effects of air on fire, serving to either inflame or to extinguish, so the opportunity lies in our stealthy approach of action (Leo) to whatever we set that breath of Air (Aquarius) towards. The Sun in Aquarius offers the balance of bringing to the forefront (or light of day) those actions and inspirations that will be of benefit to the group and broader community; in contrast to the focus on individual success. The Moon in Leo stimulates change; the firing up of the passions of the emotional tides and the centering of attention on the “me” (the Lunar spotlight in the darkened theater).  The tension between the “we” and the “me” can, if used with just the correct amount of balance and synthesis, produce the ideal combination similar to that of a celebrity who uses their renown taking center stage spotlight to enlist community support for a project to better the lives of those who would have otherwise gone unnoticed held in the anonymity of their needs.

The Full Moon is the phase of peak and expression of the most there is to offer drawn up to a place of expansion from the depths of the emotional and intuitive nature of what has been previously the focus of its transformative work. Because these energies work by default at the subconscious (or often unconscious) levels the “stuff” carried into the full moon’s light is often transparent in its revealing. If this excavation has been done purposefully and with conscious intent the Full Moon works her magick of full disclosure and collaborative change. Using this primary directive filtered through the astrological sign of Leo who is represented as the Lion on the Zodiacal wheel adds the intensity of instinctual action and self-preservation. This is the raw and primal strength of the natural born leader surveying the expanse of the lands that are held within its domain. Arrival at this place of dominance and looming large has been carefully and precisely cultivated by previous successes resulting from the calculated action that will deflect from or draw attention to are part of the stealth needed when navigating the perils of our own emotional landscapes. Despite the pitfalls, this is the time for stepping fully into the glory of what your heart finds of inspiration, adventure and draws attention to your best offerings.

Now the caution to be had in stepping into this potent spotlight is in the added energy of a Retrograde Mercury. The planet, Mercury began its retrograde motion last week on the 6th in the astrological sign of Pisces; a sign of the element Water. Being the great communicator, Mercury’s focus of interaction was fueled from drinking deeply from the depths of the Piscean waters of healing, insight and emotional expression as it transited in its backwards reach into the astrological sign of Aquarius, yesterday, where it will remain until turning direct on February 28th. This retracing of the emotion infused communicative style through Aquarian mind could keep you stuck in bringing to the spotlight (Leo) those inventive ideas inspired by heart (Moon). However, with this opportunity to remain more fully in Mercury’s energy, it is also a good time to really dig deeply into what are the treasures and what are just the masks we put on to gather attention to ourselves as we interact.

This is a good time to re-examine how we present ourselves to the world. What we value as our public persona and what we wish to improve upon so that the image projected communicates more fully who we are. What would have shone brightly during this Full Moon and drawn the magnetic attention that is typical of Leo’s energy may not be what it seems under the influence of Mercury’s duality. Something may be lost in the translation and the tendency towards lackluster replaces what should have been dynamic. Remember that I mentioned in the beginning of this article that the tension of oppositions of Sun and Moon, the “we” and the “me”? Mercury will hold us accountable for re-visiting who we believe ourselves to be. Lady Moon will show us the full potential of that “me”. And Father Sun will call us to our place of community as part of the greater “we”.

As you move through the energy of this Full Moon gathering all of the astrological pieces envision the lion hunting under the brightness of the moon. He remains in the shadows, waiting, observing and calculating just the precise moment that will likely ensure success. From this place of shadow, this skilled hunter emerges into the light; taking action in full speed and full force with power and strength, taking down its prey. He takes his share of what has been killed; leaving behind what will feed others who will scavenge the remains as a result of his dynamic action.

A Poem to Meditate Upon:

fmleo12313

Rest looking out on moon lit waters
Pause anchored strongly in self-knowing
Moon shines on mirrored surface and
Water reaches towards primal force
Majestic in its Power and strength.

Rest looking out on deep expanse
All is your shining domain
The fires of Moon’s glow
Resplendent in its fullness
Lights the way as water’s
Will-filled heart returns to you.
