Saturn and A Return to Grace

I know my strengths and my weaknesses and I have made allies of them both. I have felt the wrath of the Lord of Time and in his terrible wake I have learned to use time purposefully.

I have stretched and strained against a skin that was too tight. But in the weariness of my surrender to its necessary structure, I have marveled at what was birthed from its metamorphic cocoon.

I have remained steadfast on my spiritual path and when the Darkest night of my Soul’s searching pulled me into the chasm of doubt, I listened to the truth of my heart.

I have known failure and have been the intimate companion of the false pride and ego that covered those tracks. I sought the comfort of superiority to hide the shame of inadequacy. And in each place of comfort I have fallen further from my true self. Age has taught me the transparency of this pride and dues that are to be paid to feed its illusion.

I have embraced the Dark Mother and become her instrument when needed and although every action taken was not guided by wisdom’s hand the knowledge of my fragile emotions taught me the wisdom of compassion.

I have listened when I did not want to and found that what I imagined to be the empty space of my knowing was abundantly filled.

I have expressed my truth loudly and boldly, when perhaps I should have remained silent. And I have been silent when standing up for myself would have produced a better outcome.

I have seen the best and worst in myself and allow each to flow in accord with the stream of my heart. That stream has carried me to places unexpected and at times the dams that caused rerouting were placed there by my own intention.

I have the writings of my youth etched into the body that has become a Mother and protectress of what I created. The Crone has spoken her words to me along every step of my journey, even at the time before word was my own and the strength of tiny legs would carry me into her arms.

I have crossed the Gates of Time and my actions have made intentions that brought me to places I had never thought would be revealed. And, all the while I stood at the center of the chaos I had created in striving too far and too soon.

Now I understand. Now I see the order of my own sacred Universe and no longer do I fear the remaking of what I will become. The imprint of my life will forever be encoded within the passing of the aeons and the memory of my existence will seed the creation of what is my legacy. I willingly step into this cocoon of rebirthing as the next journey of my life’s adventure unfolds and when the time is readied and the vessel has been rendered whole, I will emerge as the butterfly , gossamer wings of graceful beating carried on the current of a life well-experienced…….

I share this writing with you, as the transiting planet Saturn aligns exactly with my natal Saturn tomorrow. This is my second Saturn return and one that in this iteration, and because Saturn moved through a series of Retrogrades, passed over this “sweet” spot 3 times.

For those of you not familiar with what a Saturn Return means, here are the basics. The planet Saturn is equated with the archetypes of time, Karma and crossing Thresholds, to name a few. This work is typified by rigid structure and a restoration of order to what has been or could become chaotic and random. Traditionally, there is not a whole lot of flexibility in the demands of Saturn, but this necessary constriction actually does provide a greater level of opportunistic flexibility that is the effect of reining everything in. Imagine a whirling bowl of candies and you have your intention set on just the piece you want. It would be much more difficult to grab on to if there was no structure to contain it (the bowl). And, regardless that the candies are spinning and not a still point of retrieval, if you slow down (time), center and focus (your internal structure) you will eventually be able to discern the patterns occurring (flexibility in patience and observation) that will provide just the right moment to reach in and grab (retrieval on the threshold) what you desire.

The “return” occurs when transiting Saturn comes to rest at its exact position-house and degree – as it was in your natal chart at the time of your birth; approx. every 29-31yrs. Most will have at least two Saturn returns (ages 29-31 and 58-62) in a lifetime. These life markers are often denoted by a prominent change of events. For instance, when I was 29 I had my first child, which caused a modification of my dancing career and by age 31, I was pregnant with Twins, which ended it completely and made me a stay-at-home Mom. I had identified myself as a dancer from a very young age so this sudden and final removal of it from my life, not to mention that I no longer had the thin body of a dancer, which I had finally controlled, did a real number on who I thought myself to be. I loved being home with our children and in looking back, that first pregnancy probably saved me physically since anorexia was preying heavily and having another life to be responsible for forced me to restructure, rethink and start eating. The four children that followed each brought their own blessing and a new realization of who I was in many settings and the impact of that self on others.

At the time of this Saturn return, all 5 of our children have graduated college (they were 5 under 5), and all within a short period of time. Three have moved to the West Coast (we live on the East) with the other 2 soon to follow to destinations unknown pursuing people and animal medicine. This has not only left an empty nest and very quiet house, but also the endings of the way in which we interacted with our children; no longer children but, adults. This has been an adjustment in knowing when to step in and when it is simply overstepping my bounds. Another point of redefining who I am in their world and finding that place within my own. A new job presented itself with more responsibility and a greater learning curve and the leaving behind of my previously isolated work setting to interaction constantly. Basically, I am a loner. Just following the first pass of this return, I embraced the unexpected opportunity to leave the Coven that was the first home of 18 years within our Tradition and form the 12th Coven of that Tradition. The final passing of this second Saturn return, punctuating 10 months of planning, additional teaching and more in preparation for a smooth transition in the next several months. Again, another make-over, forcing me into networking and starting all over again with a new group of people, circumstances and flow.

Remember I said that the Saturn return will also play out in the House where that planet resides in your birth chart? Saturn and my natal Moon (emotional landscape and processing) are both in my Fifth House- the House of Creative Endeavors. Now think about my two experiences with Saturn’s return. All are at the emotional level dealing with those things that have/are the creative products of my life. Pretty cool, huh!

During the time of your Saturn return, you receive a double helping of imminent order and change- whether you wish it or not. This is where we can either see the container as half empty or half full, the former usually being the perspective that has denoted this phase of our life’s journey as the “dreaded” Saturn return. I choose to see it as a time to tidy up house, reassess, actively and purposefully surrender to the process and see what new opportunities emerge as potential. And, in the process implement the adage, “Know Thyself”.

With these thoughts in mind, I have actively been engaged in preparation for this event for several years leading up to it. I also knew that there would be three times of agitation and stirring up the foundations. The first occurred in the Winter of 2014 – the second this Spring and now this final conjunction in the Fall; fully thrust into the power of Three. I see this as the co-joining of the Crone calling to herself the memory of the Maiden and the nurturing of the Mother. Each of these points opportunities to review, refine and look through the lens of objective time to re-structure what my focus will be moving forward.

Much of what we attribute Saturn’s energy to is based upon the Ancient Roman God, Saturnus. He was revered as a god of generation, dissolution, plenty, periodic renewal(birth) and liberation (death). Saturnalia was his Festival, held in December and was a time of feasting and revelry. Eventually, Saturn became associated with Chronos – “Father Time”, the passing or changing of the aeons as one supplanted the other. Any change in time causes disruption and the amount of that disruption is largely dependent upon how much order and structure is enforced to cause it to proceed “just so”.

Another perspective of Saturn is that of its placement on the Qabalistic Tree of Life and the sphere of Binah. Binah is one of the three that form the Supernal Triangle representing the active principle of creation. Binah is considered the Great Mother. She is the womb of container that holds the seed of potential and it is Her structure and order that in time and if viable begins the journey towards manifest form in the last sphere of Malkuth. For those of you not familiar with Qabalah I have listed some resources at the end, but for now all you need is that concept of the Creatrix.

The Gates of Saturn

I am Jove’s partner
Without me all would dissipate into the ether.

Structure order boundary and container
Are all creations of my domain.

I have seen aeons pass and know each
Of the secrets that have been carefully hidden from view.

I am record keeper and guardian of destiny
And those who are not mindful of the depth of
My perception will remain forever on the wheel.

I speak the sacred words~ the unutterable~
Heard only by those who have remained constant
And vigilant throughout the tests of time.

I am held tightly within the womb of the Great Mother
And stand as witness at humanity’s rebirth.

The final mystery is revealed and mind and heart shall be one.

A Time of Grace

Think now on the concepts of Father Time and Mother Creatrix. Parents, if you will who are responsible for creating the proper environment for their creations to thrive, grow and experience life’s lessons. If done well, this is a process of knowing when to tighten up and when to leave more room for exploration, also implying falls, cuts, bruises, joys and sorrows. What emerges from these periodic spurts is a newly refined creation, that has the weight of past experience now ready to inform the choices made in the present and moving into the future.

So, I have accepted Saturn’s return as an opportunity to shed the outworn excuses, fumbles and missteps and carry forward the timeliness of seeing myself as one who has with grace and intention navigated all the changes life has gifted me.

Full Moon in Aries
10:50pm (EDT)

Total Lunar Eclipse

The energy has been building exponentially- retrogrades, lunar cycles and eclipses have been dancing the celestial dance and now the time for breaking through is at hand.

The Moon waxes Full late tomorrow evening in the astrological sign of Aries. Aries is Fire, new beginnings (the first sign of the astrological wheel), unbridled enthusiasm and just the injection needed to pull us out of the heaviness we’ve been experiencing. Now, that is not to say that there are not still challenging times ahead, but consider this Full moon an opportunity to reset and realign. The astrological sign of Aries is noted as the “baby” of the zodiac. I prefer to think of its energy more that of the child. Children are naturally enthusiastic and see no limits to what they believe they can accomplish. Children trust what is around them, giving unconditionally and embracing every new experience. That is until, they are taught fear, caution, mistrust and begin the process of creating blocks. This full Moon brings an opportunity to reset to that space of openness and receptivity, expecting only the best as a future outcome.

The Total Lunar Eclipse

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon phases Full as the Sun – Earth and Moon line up; with the Moon passing through the Earth’s shadow. Spiritually, this energy can be considered as an opportunity of centering (our Earthly form) and opening to the strengthening of Solar Will (Sun) and the enlivened shadow of the Lunar Flow (Moon) of our Emotional self.

Other Allies:

The Moon in Aries provides a fresh perspective when engaging the emotional landscape that is revealed in the fullness of Lady Moon. The planet Mercury recently stationed retrograde, as is Uranus and Neptune as well. Remember that Sun-Earth and Moon dynamic that is occurring during the eclipse? We have Fire – Earth – and Water at play. Retrogrades provide an intensity of focus of the energy of that planet. Mercury is retrograde in Libra (Air) – Uranus is retrograde in Aries (Fire) – and Neptune is retrograde in Pisces (Water).

During this super-moon the dance is a trio of Fire- Earth and Water, action/will partnering within the foundational and human experience that is expressed so beautifully through our emotions, desires and compassion.

The Sun and Retrograde Mercury recently transited into the Airy sign of Libra. Taking that into consideration, we have all four of the alchemical elements represented during this dynamic Full Moon and Lunar eclipse. The bountiful gifts of each Full Moon are punctuated by the relationships and interactions in a dance of emotional empowerment and active will. The gifts of this Moon are those of great expectations and excitement about all that lay ahead as we begin anew the inner dialogue (Mercury-communication) of  alignment (much like the alignment of sun-earth and moon in the eclipse) of Mind (Air-Sun/Mercury)- Heart (Moon/Neptune) – the Fire of Action and Will (Uranus) and Body (Earth).

Blessings of this Moon of grace and light…

Full Moon in Scorpio
11:42pm (EDT)

The Moon waxes full in the astrological sign of Scorpio late Sunday evening. It uses the cover of darkened night to exert the mystery and hidden truths that are part and parcel of Scorpion energy.

A Full Moon signifies the opposition of Sun and Moon. In this case we have the strength, solidity and straight forwardness of the earthy Taurus Sun feeling the passive aggressiveness of a moody emotional landscape filled with hidden surprises and carefully guarded secrets that is the life’s blood of a Scorpio Moon. Scorpio is known for its mystery and the ability to intuit information as it dips deeply into areas that prefer their privacy. The challenge is one of remaining too long in this space of introspection and the effects of becoming prisoner of your own darker nature. This is also why Scorpio is prone to obsessive and addictive behavior.  Now, although this can become a detriment, that same obsessive and addictive nature can be re-tooled to become the passion that guides the course to success and the stability of habitual and predictable response that holds steady the course when everything around is in chaos.

So, how can this energy be used at the Full Moon? It’s a great time to do some soul searching and call to the foreground what keeps you motivated at an emotional level. What are your passions and what form of disciplined action will you create that becomes your positive and productive addiction? My natal Moon is in Scorpio, so I use the energy of a moon in Scorpio to sit in reflection, allow myself intuitive nature to rise up and become the healing waters that transform. An aspect of Scorpio that is often overlooked is that of healing. One of its associations is that of Death. Any death leaves the space for new growth to begin. Having Mother Moon cloaked in Scorpio’s death pall ensures that wherever there is release, healing is soon to follow.

Saturn (Mid-March) and Pluto (Mid-April) are Retrograde:

We are only two weeks into the Pluto Retrograde and already there are signs that many people are feeling its effects. Tightly wound and seeming to be vibrating within with pent up energy that is just about ready to burst is not uncommon and put a group of this energy together and the effect is much like the vibrating tray of metal balls- some bumping into each and causing others to fall off!

I had mentioned in the last post that Pluto is the ruling planet of Scorpio, and although it is not currently in that astrological sign, it still provides one of the underlying currents of this Full Moon’s energies. Mother Moon will provide additional light into those darkened recesses and what has been percolating at a personal level will have the opportunity for closer inspection.

Another Aspect to Consider

Mercury will form an aspect in opposition to (Retrograde) Saturn. Mercury is the planet of communication and Saturn likes to keep order and structure with tight control. With the dynamic of these two in opposition, and the added emphasis of Saturn’s nature while retrograde think on the concept of censorship and difficulty getting everything out that you wish to express (Mercury) because it has just been re-written by the CEO of micromanagement.

Much of what will be communicated will be restricted in its content and interpretation, so as you sit in reflection or have desire to allow the full moon to inform, be mindful that you will only be receiving part of the communication intended. Take what is given and then allow Time (another of Saturn’s focus)to fill in as it will what was not able to be fully received.

Mercury is gearing up for its retrograde on May 18th, heralding a Trinity of Air (Mercury), Fire (Saturn) and Earth (Pluto); all highly focused and directed by their planet’s retrograde.

From the Center of My Being:

Let the fullness of the Moon’s Light and the healing of Scorpio’s waters purify and open up the space of integration and inner work that has been called into action in the very core of who and what you are. This is the time for a bit of breathing room from the rigidity exacted by Saturn as Pluto dug deeply to retrieve and reveal to you what the past held and the future promises. Allow the sting of the Scorpion’s tail to part the internal veiling that has left you feeling at odds and off-center.

Let the deep water’s of Mother Moon’s grace provide the light by the lessons learned from Saturn’s structure may be carried on the wings of Scorpio’s keen sighted Eagle. And, as this flooding of purifying light bursts forth let its fires transform what is ready to receive the blessing of Scorpio’s Phoenix. These steps are the necessary healing that must occur as we enter the next round of retrograde Saturn and Pluto’s catalyzing energy.

Remember, one step at a time. A time for assessing. A time for re-ordering. A time for integration and agitation. A time for transformation. A time for purifying and preparation and a time for things ti begin anew so the next level of steps may be realized.

Waning Moon in Libra
Ruling Planet: Venus

Tonight the Mother Moon is waning in the astrological sign of Libra. The ruling planet of Libra is Venus and tonight I call upon the beauty and grace, ferocity and transformative nature of her energy. As the flow of moon’s light wanes towards the mystery of her darkness, seek her in the growing shadow just as you call to her in the fullness of her waxing light.

Sleeping with the Goddess: The Power of the Sacred Feminine

I twist and turn as the Fates
Spin the multicolored threads
That are the web of life.

Strength and beauty grace my path
And Mother’s gaze softens
As she looks upon my weaving.

I awaken joyous and bursting
With life and renewed spirit
Youth my ally and wisdom
Just from hand’s reach
Not ready for the taking.

I sigh into the pain as
New life issues forth
I am caretaker and guardian
Of this sacred living gift.

I close my eyes and slumber finds me
Her beating heart echoes through me
Arms cradling Her child of making
Welcoming me home into her
Womb of creation.

We, as pagans celebrate the duality and polarity of all manner of things as we perform our workings of magick, make offerings to the Deities and weave the rich tapestry of our magickal and mundane lives. Contained within these polarities are the concepts of the masculine and the feminine that transcend gender and sexual dynamics. These are the outpourings of the solar and the lunar, strength and emotion, force and form. Read More at: Womb of Light Blog

Auspicious Days – Astrological Samhain

November 7.2014
7:56 am

Although the traditional celebration of Samhain is marked as October 31st the astrological energy of Samhain stands at the midpoint (or Cross quarter between the autumnal equinox and the Winter Solstice). The date and time of astrological Samhain is designated by the Scorpio Sun having reached the 15th-degree (mid point of the 30-degrees of each astrological sign); usually occurring around the 6-7 or 8th of November. You could think of this as the climatic release of a buildup of all the necessary components to reach deeply towards accessing ancestral wisdom. This space of time occurred from All Hallow’s Eve on the the 31st/1st until it’s peak at astrological Samhain.  This is also why we often will still be very receptive to what seem to be “extra” messages from loved ones after Halloween’s date and our formal celebration and acknowledgement has ended. The signs are still very much present that the spirits are still strongly among us, but we seek them in the full light of the Solar day, rather than in the shadows and crossroads of All Hallow’s night.

The focus of this calling of Samhain’s energy is one of transformation. The heat of the Solar light flowing as the Scorpio Sun rises from its sleep in the dark caverns  and embraces the Sun as the Phoenix rising. Visually, by the time we reach the end of the first seven days of  November, the darkness crowds in more quickly, a sign that the energy is gaining momentum as it gathers what is needed to call forth the light at the Winter Solstice. This is the opportunity to gather that light within, to call upon the gifts of accessing the wisdom of what lay beyond the veils of our human experience and allow its power to light the fires within the space of our human form. We open our awareness and our consciousness to the potential of what awaits us within these solar gates.

There is the under-current of chill in the air that reaches deep into bone and joint. The chilling at times cannot be  warmed, so deep is its reach and the reminder of being alive is accented by the thought of the coldness of a form for whose flame of light has gone out. This chill seems to move with us, at times enveloping us in its cloaking. This is the continued turning of the Great Wheel and the exhale of expansive release as it reaches towards the next Sabbat.

I like to think of the balance that is achieved in formulating the intention of Samhain as a tool for greater self-knowledge and transformation. Standing in the darkness of the crossroads on All Hallow’s eve and calling to the ancestors to guide my way through the labyrinth of the underworld as I seek the fine gems of their wisdom is the beginning of a journey that pierces the veils that separate. Sorting through and taking in what I retrieve from that opening and space of darkened awareness  lays the foundations. And coming 7 days later (remember 7 is the mystical number of great learning and extended paths) to awakening under the Solar light of Astrological Samhain provides the catalytic flames that will ultimately transform. This is the initiatory experience of gathering from the past to enhance the present and thus inform the future.

The Moon waxed full in Taurus last night and remains in that sign until 11:17am when it transits void until 8:45p.m.; moving into Gemini. The strength of Taurus’ energy provides the foundation of human form, alive and vital in that strength. As the Moon transits into Gemini on the eve of astrological Samhain, that affirmation of human form and life can issue the call to those who have passed beyond the veils of the living and communicate with heartfelt emotion and inspired mind.

For the Celts, Samhain marked the end of the magickal year and the work of crafting the new; another attribute of Scorpio’s gates of death and rebirth. This is not the ending of our magickal aspirations, just the closing of the Gates of access to the deeper wisdom of the ancestors to guide and inform as the day’s energies find respite at sundown. Hail farewell to those who have heeded your call. There is still much work to be done and in keeping with any New Year, that work begins with taking inventory of what you have gained from your experiences of the previous year.

So dive a little deeper into connecting with the oracular self today. The ancestors remain for this brief amount of time to provide the support needed. As the energy of the Solar Month reaches it’s apex, Scorpio rises to the point of the Phoenix- ablaze in the glory of its transformation guided by the wisdom of those loved ones who released their hold on life.

The Path

This lengthy poem was inspired after last weekend’s Climbing the Tree ritual. The Climbing the Tree weekend is hosted by the Tradition to which I belong, The Assembly of the Sacred Wheel. This is a large event requiring much planning, so it is only held every several years (the last being in 2009) and provides the experience of walking the lightning flash of the Qabalisic Tree of Life as an experiential grouping of 10 mini-rituals.

The Tree is laid out on the grounds of Seelie Court and participants move through the Tree, walking the paths and having a ritual experience in each of the spheres in accord with that sphere’s energy. I have had the honor of taking on the role of as one of the spheres for the past 3 runs, but never had the opportunity to actually walk the Tree in its entirety as a participant. This year, I had the good fortune to be able to experience the full Tree!

I wanted to share this writing as a source of inspiration for seeing the potential that is held in being a participant in your own spiritual journey. The lessons of the Qabalistic Tree are ones that are relatable to everyone’s mundane and spiritual experiences and the goal of study is one of self-knowledge and growth.

I invite you to walk with me on the Path of my experience of the Tree.  The beauty is that you do not have to know anything about Qabalah to appreciate what this writing has to relate. You have but to set your foot upon the Path and be open to where that path may lead…….

I step upon the Path
And Earth’s energy
Stands as fertile ground.

Water flows from
Deeply hidden wells
Fire streams from
Sun’s quickened light
Air breathes life into
Earth that rises and shifts
Urging me onward.

The tool of my re-making
In heart –body –mind
And will is found.

I move along the path
Into the night sky temple
Of the moon where star
And dreamscape weave
A tapestry that tells of
Cycles of knowing and
Illusion’s sacrificial release.

The path is lit from celestial sky
And all clears with each step
Forward into clarity of mind
That holds creation’s intent
Breathed into life from
Library’s inspired great halls.

I move now with mind
Seeking the victory of
Beauty’s face and come
To pause in awe of Mother
Nature’s surrounding gifts.

Their power and wild beauty
Held within my own physical
Form now awakened and verdant
Mantle claimed as Gaia’s own.

I walk with tears of gnosis
Streaming from gates long
Needing the power of heart’s
Release and step out into the
Vast potential of the unknown.

Into Sun’s great downpour
Harmonious center of
Golden strands that demand
The sacrifice of full light’s scrutiny.

I scream into a breath that offers
Up true release and heat rising
From within empowers my intent
As I leave this place of synthesis
Ablaze with strength newly found.

The sun sets behind me as
Sharpened knife and the
Sword of truth challenge
And give fearsome dare.

Tears now flow freely
Reflected in shimmering
Blade of light and what I
Knew of myself is surrendered
To the pointed test of true worth.

From these fires of tempering
Comes new form that will wield
Its measure of might as warrior
As Goddess and as guardian
Of the sacred Great Work of self.

Courage has been tested
And mercy now awaits
What has been purposefully
Broken down to be birthed anew.

I walk to a place of mercy
I stand crowned as King of
My worldly and spiritual domains
The choice of ruler-ship and weight of
Responsibility now mine to claim.

Like pieces on a chess board
Each move affects the next
Each calculation of mind
Brings reality of heart’s consequence.

There is no winning play as the
Board continually changes and
The pieces transmute as the
Players evolve and grow.

Flexibility and mastery over
What holds me in chains as servant
Rather than ruler over how I would
Construct and command my
Worldly and spiritual domains.

The final realization is one hidden
In plain sight and boldly echoes
The truth of free will’s choice to move
Confidently in changing course and
Not lose sight of drawing to me
What is held dear in those conquests.

I breath deeply taking in all that has
Been learned as the next challenge
Awaits and the choice now at hand
To cross the abyss deep and wide.

I step moving cautiously along a
Path whose end cannot be seen
So great the veiling of light and dark
Faith and a silent promise my only guides
As I stand precariously balanced mid-point
Shedding the last of my mortal identity.

Mother’s voice calls to me gently
Into arms of dark black sea softly
Reminding of all that has been given
And what more remains in hopes
And wishes and dreams.

Time holds no false enchantment
As lifetimes flow as one and every
Pearl of dark sea’s creation has
Potential to be the great manifest one.

Dip deep into the waters
Drink freely from their source
Take one dream as heart’s most cherished
And bring it through the womb of manifest birth.

I breathe into the vision of potential’s hope
The path now one of nebula and galaxy
Of cosmos and starry birth.

I move as witness to the birthing of the Universe
The light of my being scattered as seeds
Of star-filled light moving and flowing
The memory of this potent exchange
Holding the understanding of re-union
And dissolution of what is contained in
Body of light and flesh and bone.

From this eternal cycle of cosmos
An awakening of key held within
Human’s birthing light and deeper
Place of manifesting star’s gift of sight.

I breathe out the light of wisdom
And enter the brilliance of liminal space
That blinds me from the child of the
Limitless All that I am.

What lays hidden in my being
That cries out to be brought
Into the crown of immanence.

I stand in the silence
No words or thoughts
No emotions or action
Can articulate the gnosis
That fills by Spirit and Soul.

All and nothing awaits
The next step upon this
Never ending Path.

The journey begins anew
The possibilities change
And every step has been taken
In all of its many forms.

And as the return of worldly
Affairs and knowledge of my
Place within.

I remain steadfast in my devotion to the Great Work
As the Kingdom of my manifest being
Seeks the Foundation that has been created
By the Glory-filled Victory of my inner Beauty.

Beauty that has been forged by my will to action honed
By the courage of justifiable Might
And cooled in the expansive waters of Mercy.

I have seen the fear of my own reflection in the
Knowledge of all parts of myself claimed by the Great Abyss
And these fears have been soothed by the ebb and flow of
The Dark Mother’s Understanding and my Celestial Father’s
Cosmic Wisdom.

I have experienced this and more in my journey upon the Path
Where the Crown of my Divine Kingship shines in brilliance
For all to see.

Sun in Virgo – The Details of the Tree

Posted in The Temple of Mercury, The Temple of the Sun, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on August 31, 2014 by themagickalpen

Each crevice is etched deeply
And each tells the greater
Story of my many years.

Water has moved through
Insects have burrowed deep
And found shelter from
Weather’s piercing bite.

I stand tall and strong
Because of the many
Segments that make up
The core of my being.

My bark is roughened
And my branches spread
In a canopy of grace
Each reaching back into
The furrows of my
Creviced trunk.

As we enter the Temple of the Sun, Qabalistically we are entering into connection with the central sphere on the Tree of Life, Tiphareth. The name given this sphere is Beauty and the energy is one of synthesis through sacrifice and integration through refinement of the sum of all of its parts. This is much the same energy that we experience in the course of a Solar year. The energy of each of the Zodiacal signs, their element and modality are modified and expressed through the brilliance of the Sun. And, in keeping with the evolutionary process of movement from one sign to the next, each is informed by the previous sign’s energy and contributes a part of its dynamic into the sign that follows. Please see the end of this post for recommendations about learning more about the Tree of Life.

Virgo and Mercury on the Tree

Astrologically, we have learned that Virgo is ruled by the master communicator- Mercury. Every interaction we have, every thought and idea, and every act of creative expression is a form of Mercury’s endeavors to inform, share and interconnect.

Within the Qabalistic Tree, Virgo and Mercury hold sway in the Sphere of Hod and the Paths of the Tree – 12th and 2oth. When we speak of the energy of Virgo as offering the details of the Tree we are considering the primary directive of Virgo to establish detailed and concise energy that can be effectively communicated and used to create in a concrete and physical way. This energy is expressed in the details of each of the spheres energies and the synthesized action of the connecting paths in processing this pure essence. We find this informed action expressed in the pure mind of the Qabalistic sphere of Hod.

Hod (Mercury) and Tiphareth (Sun)
Virgo Master Tree

Tiphareth and the Sun

Each of the Sephiroth and connecting Paths of the Tree of Life holds correspondence with a planetary and/or zodiacal energy. The physical Sun stands centrally within our solar system, providing light and heat. Tiphareth provides the space of transformation and the full force generator that distributes what is processed so it may be utilized and transmuted by whatever it emanates its energy into. This is the sacrificial aspect of this sphere. This is the action of enlivening within its own source to ensure the continuation of the creative process begun within the other components of the Tree. So we begin in this central hub of universal energy and move out towards the flow of energy represented by the essence of Pure Mind that is the sphere of Hod.

Hod: The Sphere of Pure Mind

Scintillating mind of reason and intellect
Whose course is drawn from
The halls of libraries’ tomes.

Echoes of the One emanate down
Into the hollow of conductivity.

The blueprint of electric charge and
Inspiration’s whim creating the
Alchemical tube to hold the elixir of
Manifest form.

Teachings and truths spun together
And finally issued forth flow on
The currents of communication
And Hermes sets in stone the power
Of mind and word.

Hod is the eighth (8th) Sphere. Within the energy of the number 8 is great power and the sacrifice of contraction and expansion. The holding and funneling of what wishes to expand and then the ultimate release into a great circle of expansive formlessness. It is also the doubling of the stability and foundation expressed by the number four. It is the mirroring of two bases of four sides that reflect back to one another in perfect symmetry. The union of Higher and Lower Mind, the duality and polarity of pairs that have been elevated upon a strong and durable foundation.

Hod is assigned the element of Water. This water is typified as the flow of mind in constant and continual movement. It is the constant stream of download that runs a pure and unspoiled course with the singular goal of informing whatever is in receipt of its inspiration. Some of this channel will be collected and brought further down into the filters that will determine final manifestation, but most will remain in constant movement of flow until one droplet of viable potential ripples outward in its effect.

The Sphere of Communication

The Planetary ruler of Hod is Mercury, so it is fitting that this sphere is considered the sphere of communication. Within its rationale and reasoning are the tools that may be used in discovering the deeper mystery contained within information. It is through the crystal clarity of pristine thinking that enables a better and more efficient means of communicating what knowledge has been extracted. It is also this modality that makes Hod the ideal energetic support for ritual work. Effective ritual and devotional practice are honed from clear and purposeful intent. If that intent is not objectively informed the resulting product of that ritual will not be as strong or as durable in form and focus. If, however, objective thought and clear Higher Mind is working in accord with focused intent, the results become the inroads and precursors to future successful magick, devotional or spiritual practice.

The 20th Path: Virgo and Mercury

20th Path

My physical form glows from
The discipline of my practice.

My body of light revealed in
The actions and will of my
Greater work upon the path.

I fuel its light with the devotion
Of service and the breath of the
Divine flows in response to the
Circuit of light held within.

The 20th Path is one of tempering will. The energy of the connecting spheres is powerful and both have risk of overwhelming the other. The pure essence of merciful and right action held within Chesed and the willingness to sacrifice and act as catalytic force held within Tiphareth are best used when collaboratively informed. The lesson of their coalesce energy is one of achieving a state of grace that has been cultivated through accountability and justifiable action.

This path expresses the power of reclaiming control of the will and reaching up towards a more balanced way of expressing that will. Without the conscience as guide will can exert itself aggressively and become the tool of tyrants and manipulators. If conscience guides the way, merciful action may step in to lead the misguided will towards a state of grace. Chesed has the broader perspective and the experience of Geburah’s might as resource.

The Planetary/Zodiacal Energy
Mercury/Virgo

Mercury is the ruling planet of the astrological sign of Virgo. In its expression of interaction with Virgo, communication is a result of careful analysis and applied categorization of its effects in manifest form.

Virgo is of the element Earth and provides the foundation strength that is the base of the highest mountain or the deep reaching roots of the tallest tree. It maintains the structure based upon planning and exacting only what is needed in the precise amounts so that all is orderly.

These energies placed upon the 20th Path provide the tools of anchoring necessary to insure unwavering determination that can receive the expansive energy of broader vision. The nature of duality that is inherent within Mercury enables flexibility and adaptability as the potency of expansion is exacted upon Tiphareth’s state of refining process. The preciseness of Virgoan energy presents as knowing when to stop providing air to the balloon so it will not burst under the force of overdone expansion.

Another Path of Expression: Mercury on the 12th Path

The 12th Path: A Supernal of Communication

12thPath

The silence breathed and life
For a moment paused
Waiting for lengthy
Exhale towards Mother’s womb
Life still un-quickened takes form
And from pain and suffering
Comes the gentle hand of
Father’s great love and grace.

The 12th Path, just as the 11th Path, serves as the beginning of opening the vessel that will become the incubator of what the Divine desires to manifest. Here we have the connection to the feminine principle of collective form and the place from which the combination of seed and ovum can emerge in descent towards final manifest form. This act of conception is the dividing of the cells of the singular whole in order to prepare the waters of quickening.

The Planetary Energy
Mercury

The planet Mercury is typified by its communicative style, duality and adaptable persona. This energy is dynamic and profound in what it can draw to itself and what it can ultimately create from the information gathered. Placed upon the 12th Path, Mercury presents as the informant, ready to adapt to what is needed as the creative process takes hold within Binah’s womb as the Godhead of Kether oversees and modifies to insure the viable continuation of its emanation.

The Magician

Note: Each of the Paths of the Qabalistic Tree has the assignation of a Tarot key placed upon it as further correspondence to its energy. The Paths 11-32 are represented using the Major Arcana cards.

Tarot Key I – The Magician is the conduit of wielding the flow of universal energy from the ephemeral realms of the Divine and the manifest foundations of the Physical world. We see within the Magician the ability and knowledge to effectively create drawing from the universal laws that govern the magickal and the mundane. There is composure and assuredness in this power, yet the realization that he as well is subject to the transformative energies he is choosing to be vessel for. This is a state of control that has been finely honed and exacted with just the precise amount of force and form to produce the product of power and magick. The Magician is the interface that we hold within that contains all that is needed to produce new life and new form of Being. But, its energy may only be accessed when the all of the tools (parts of self) are acquired and mastered.

I Love this image of the magician. It has the feel of manifestation being brought into the realm of concrete reality. Sorting, analyzing and organizing very carefully planned actions. And, when all has been appropriately identified there is a pause of reflection as the master of magick contemplates the paradox of his/her work.

In Conclusion:

As we consider the attributes of Virgo and its ruling planet Mercury and their impact on the Tree of Life the prominent focus is one of creative expression of all of the finer aspects of the Tree. The key lay in the detail and when time is given to seeking those details a deeper perspective of the Tree can be developed. When we breathe into the space of what lay between what is overt we are opening to the mystery of communication that courses through our physical being in resonance to the many layers of our subtle and spiritual selves.

The stable foundation provided by Virgo’s grounding in what has been learned by diligence, hard work and truly looking at every aspect of the equation is of no value if never shared and made useable. Its seeking and outreaching style flows through the Tree reaching up towards the realms of the creative source, seeking the answers to questions of purpose and Soul’s intent. And, this stream of palpable inquiry continues in downward emanation, standing the further testing of Yesod and in the act of ultimate analysis and refinement makes its way into the manifest realm of Malkuth.

As the light of Tiphareth (Sun) shines brightly and radiates its vision of magnetic attraction throughout the multilayered branches of a tree that reaches far and wide in its expanse and impact we are reminded that in this light of curiosity and the inquisitive seeker bringing the light of newly informed foundation to all who will step upon its broad base of knowledge.

A Fiercely Beating Heart: The Sun in Taurus

Temple of Sun-Taurus
Sun in Taurus

4.19.2014
11:56pm (EDT)

Planetary Ruler: Venus

A Fiercely Beating Heart

Strength unmoved as dust swirls
Around the stamping of hoof.
Fire rages in the heart and
Coils of fevered breath move from
Chamber of lung and throat
Weaving between air’s stagnant web.

I am earth, solid and great
In purpose and my strength
Is held and guided by a heart that beats
Fiercely to the rhythm of love.

I will stand my ground in
Defense of the truths I perceive.
And, if provoked will
Charge with intent and
Precise aim as I relentlessly
Pursue the source of irritation.

Some would see me as impetuous
And easily stoked to irrational rage
And others would say I was immovable
Stagnant and set in my ways.

Both would be true
For my impetuosity comes
From being firmly grounded and
My grounding takes shape from
The flashes of inspiration I explore.

I am patient and I am persistent
As I move through life’s course.
And within my breast beats
A heart that holds the earth’s
Wisdom and light deep within.

The astrological sign of Taurus is one of the element of Earth and the Fixed Modality. Taurus is also the first of the fixed signs which have dual meaning as the Four Holy Creatures (More on this in a special posting). Its planetary ruler is Venus, whose greater mystery is one of relationship and coming to a place of acceptance of all parts of your being. The natural energy of the Sun, that of shedding great light on whatever is in its spectrum is now poured into the earthy realms of what strives towards stability and structure through the power of great strength. This solar month has maximum potential for firming up what means we use and how we define ourselves as physical beings. The caution is one of remaining too long in standing your ground and holding onto to false definitions simply because you do not wish to disrupt the comfort of the status quo.

The Element of Earth

The energy of Earth is creation of a solid foundation and deep connection to the physical world. Expressed through the sign of Taurus, Earth presents in a stalwart and at times stubborn approach, remaining steadfast and strong in conviction and opinion. Earth is the energy of the magnet that attracts to itself what it sends forth. Because earth defines the manifest world and all that is contained within, it draws to itself the power of manifestation itself and with the bolster of the Sun’s light and strength enhancing this fertile potency what is yielded becomes both the defender and the aggressor for what can be accomplished in manifest creation.

A Fixed Modality

The energy of the Fixed signs is one of stability that occurs in natural response to the initial burst (Cardinal modality) of movement disbursed by the sign preceding it. This holding space becomes one of permanence that functions then as the center point of synthesis and refinement of what has come into its field of dynamic form.

Hold steady
Stand strong
Be the container.

Hold fast the
Energy that pours
Forth relentlessly.

The Middle Way
Proves firm and true
What generates inside
Soars above and
Reaches deeply below.

Draw up its strength
Pull down its light
Draw in its anchor of center
And allow to pour forth that
Which will be renewed.

The Fixed energy of Earthy Taurus is that of the place of grounding the fires that had been sparked and set anew by Aries. The symbol of the Bull for the Taurus is aptly expressed as holding its ground, ensuring that what comes into its space will receive the appropriate attention and focus of energy to bring it into manifestation. This attribution also relates to those things which connect us most deeply to the natural world and all that is gifted through physical manifestation. It is for this reason that all of the earth signs of the zodiac hold key to mastery of the mundane. Finances and those things that are acquired through our physical efforts are all enhanced by the natural fertility and potential for manifest expression that the Earth itself holds.

The Next Step

Taurus is the second sign of the Zodiac and following in the
enthusiastic outpouring of Aries, Taurus stands ready in its place of a fixed sign. The initial burst of enthusiasm (Aries) is now curbed and brought into form by the concrete solid container that is Taurus. Being a fixed sign, its nature is to hold strong and steady, albeit, immovable at times. This center of the road strength can generate a stable base from which growth of material endeavors flourishes and survives even in the most turbulent of circumstances. The symbol for Taurus is a bull. The choice of this particular animal gives great clue to the innate qualities of Taurus. Strength, sure footedness and earthiness by virtue of its sheer size offer the potential for an individual, who is stalwartly and commanding in their presence.

Venus is the Ruling Planet of Taurus. The energy of Venus is that of beauty, harmony and awakening the emotional self. It is the heart that yearns for romance and connection. This energy supports social interaction and the overwhelming goal is to connect at a deep and often intimate level with those of our choosing. A natural love of beauty and great sense of aesthetic style enhance the home life and material endeavors of Taurus.

Preparing the Way

At this time of the year in the Northern hemisphere, we see the potency of Taurus expressed as the earth greens Herself in preparation for Father Sun’s waxing heat. The vibrancy of the Sun and its strength of Taurean energy pours deeply into the earth itself. The work of Aries (and the Spring Equinox) was one of seeding and attracting the sun’s light and flame into the earth to enable the first buds to sprout. Taurus is the earthy container that will provide the anchor and prepare the way for each seed to blossom in its own way.

In the Southern Hemisphere the emphasis is the reversed as all make preparation for the waning of the Sun’s light. What had begun to be gathered as balanced harvest (The Fall Equinox) is now turned into the manifest forms of what will be sustenance during the winter. Grain becomes bread, vegetables are stored and preserved. What is taken from the earth and the fires of energy expended in reaping its product is stabilized and the planned rest of remaining steady in resolve is taken as the container is formed for productive result.

Both are held in the steadiness and determination of Taurus and the strength and enlivening of Father Sun directing its focus. The goal is one of preparing and stabilizing the way for the next phase of growth and expansion when the Sun transits next into the Mutable sign of Gemini.

A Fiercely Beating Heart

This solar month is one of opportunity to dig deeply into the stores of your own resolve, purely for the sake of safeguarding and building upon them the foundation of what you hold as your place in the physical world. In the chronology of the Zodiac, this is the growth from the impetuosity of Aires fires into one of growing stability through the anchoring of Taurus. This is the work of the adolescent; learning their impact on the physical world that surrounds them and the point of holding firm in what they believe to be true of the world. This is also the time of testing what you know of your physical nature. The questions of the adolescent seek to know what each day will bring in experience. The future is one of trying on various costumes through play and imagination. These are the stuff that becomes the plans for what is finally settled upon as the child matures and readies for college and work. The mud pies created become the culinary delights of the master pastry chef. The fairy crown of leaf, dirt and flowers becomes the fashionista’s desire as designer sets to cloth the garments of the imagination.

And, so in the spirit of Taurus and as we call forth the energy of the Sun as it continues its zodiacal cycle, I repeat the invocation that opened the Gate to this Temple. As you read through it think back to your adolescence and the stubborn and at time rebellious qualities you exhibited. Think back to digging into the earth searching for those gems of worm and insect or planting your first garden. Think back to the experience of full, healthy physical body running endlessly in the pure joy of anticipation of what lay beyond. Think back to the smells of the fresh damp soil as you rest lying in soft grass looking up at clouds moving swiftly overhead and feeling the fiercely beating heart that affirmed your youth, physicality and life. This is your strength and your foundation as you re-anchor and invoke the Solar power of this month in Taurus as you awaken those fires of RA within your own Earth’s center core.

Hymn to RA

All Hail to Thee, Mighty RA
Blaze of noon day sun.
Your fiery orb high in the
Sky above as we kneel
Beneath the heat of
Your radiance.

All the Gods bow to your radiance
All the Goddesses sing hymns of praise
To Your glory and man
Lays prostrate in humility
And devotion at the altar of
Your making.

Sweet music of adoration and offerings
Brought forth from the Black Land
Rise up in praise and thanks for
Your Sustaining Light.

All darkness flees at the touch of Your hand
All ceases its movement as Your expansive
Rays stretch across the morning sky.

The lotus opens to receive Your Touch
And the sands glisten as rare jewels
As You gaze upon each grain washed
Clean in the boundless ocean that
Reflects the brilliance of your face.

All Hail to Thee
Amun-RA
All Hail to Thee
Who sits high
Above the world.

Khepra in the East
Atum in the West
Whose eye holds the
Point of Life and the
Trifold Arc of Power.

Your eyes see all and
You are the place of return
Within the glowing blackness
Of the Midnight Sun.

All Hail to Thee
All Hail to Thee
Amun, Amun, Amen!

Full Moon in Libra

3:42a.m. (EDT)

Total Lunar Eclipse Begins 3:07am (EDT)

The Moon is Full in the early morning hours of April 15th in the astrological sign of Libra with a total Lunar Eclipse punctuating the energetic experience. This combination offers the potential for some very powerful and deep spiritual work.

A Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the shadow of the Earth as it is lit from behind by the Sun. The usual orbit of the Moon is just far enough off the Earth/Solar plane that the Moon makes its journey avoiding the shadow of the Earth casts.  The eclipse places the Sun directly behind the Earth as the Moon moves into the position within Earth’s shadow. This early morning eclipse will be a Total Eclipse meaning that the Moon passes through the entirety of the Earth’s shadow from 3:07am to 4:25am. The refraction of light occurring from the filtering of earth’s atmosphere as light shines directly from the Sun behind the earth causes a natural progression of changing the moon’s coloring from the creamy white of a normal Full Moon to a reddish brown coloring of the moon as the eclipse event takes place. The Moon returns to its milky whiteness as She basks in the full shining of Sun upon her face.

LEDiagram1c

For lots of great information about eclipses and, in particular this eclipse go to: mreclispse.com.  This site has everything you want to know about the astronomy of Solar and Lunar Eclipses.

If we consider the spiritual implications of the eclipse energy we are able to call upon the energies of Will (Sun), Manifestation and Foundation (Earth) and intuitive Heart (Moon). In the placement of the Lunar Eclipse, Earth receives the direct outpouring of the sun’s energy as its reflective back light of emanation towards the Moon’s surface. Divine Will (our Spiritual Sun) is brought to a place of manifest and practical use as we, as physical beings, are especially enlivened by its solar principle and dynamic of energy.

The reflection of this shadow of light emanates out towards the moon in her phase of fullness through the filter of Earth (and opportunity to bring it to manifestation). This refraction of sun’s light refines the matters of heart and quickens in a subtle yet profound way of application as it passes through the earth shadow of our form imbuing the Full Moon energy with the hidden resources of what lay at our inner sun’s core. Drawing this light shadow that holds the mysteries of our internal lunarscape into the intuitive waters that flow in the intermittent dimming (the frequency of the Lunar Eclipses) of its full potential provides the space of accessing those qualities that strengthen the aspects of our manifest nature that lay in the shadows and enliven these by emotional and intuitive insight so they may be used in a more practical manner as they are brought to the fullness of their potential. Who we are in the strength (Sun) of our manifest form (Moon) and the will we call forth empowers these deep waters of our intuitive nature (Moon).

Now, add the astrological component. The Moon is Full in the Cardinal sign Libra. Libra is depicted as the Scales of balance. Refinement and love of the intellectual nature of calibrating the scales of balance to maintain that balance is the type of mental gymnastics the Air (Intellect/mind) sign of Libra enjoys. The Full Moon ushers in the highest potential and peak of whatever energy it is reflecting, so heart infused by refined emotions and intuition honed by informed trial and error are at hand.

The emphasis of balance that Libra exerts is enhanced by this Total Lunar Eclipse. The polarities of Male (Sun) and Female (Moon) that are present in the opposition of Sun and Moon that occurs during a full moon are both subdued in their synthesis at the level of manifestation(Earth). In this case, the extremes of the natural flow of Sun and Moon are brought to the mid-point of Earth, standing as synthesizer of the two. This is the purposeful and modulated conversation between a pair of opposites (Sun and Moon) that has similar goal and each is willing to compromise (Libra) in its application and civilized assertion of its needs and desires so that something reflecting the harmonious (Libra) values of each may be initiated (Cardinal Modality) towards manifest form (Earth).

In spiritual working, making full use of these varied dynamics of a Full Moon and a Lunar Eclipse offers opportunity to reshape and refine what we think about those qualities of heart that lie just below the surface of what we normally express to inform our human experience. This action allows the calling forth of the informed intent to bring them into a state of balance and harmonious expression in our daily affairs. And, all works collaboratively in a balanced state knowing that strength of Divine Will (Sun) continually flows in support as the back lighting for the ebb and flow (Moon) of these energies as the foundational (Earth) work that the shadow of our inner creative Will to Manifest brings to the surface.
